Good article! Never knew how to pump up the boot disk. I had one that my friend made a while back, but that got destroyed in my move freshman year (speakers and computer disks don't mix)

I always used the Windows standard make a bootdisk function. Never knew making one could be so detailed.

Yea if you customize it you can do things with 1 touch of a key. No more typing commands.
Also on the 95 and 98 cd there is a progie called MSbatch that you can run and configure just like doing a custom setup and save the file. It saves it as an .inf and when you install with that file in the 9x dir it will set things up automatically, even the key code.. Pretty cool stuff.. [ Sticking out Tongue

Hi!
I used your instructions and made a boot disk for a wME!!
But i want to use it for playing old dos games, so i tryed to load emm386.exe for my Sblive's Sb16 emulation, but when i added following to config.sys:
Device=c:\windows\himem.sys
Device=c:\windows\emm386.exe
ram auto
dos=high,umb

And booted the computer sayd:

Windows XMS Driver version 3.95 extented memory specification(XMS) version 3.0 copyright 1988-1995 M$ corp.

ERROR: An extended memory manages is already installed XMS driver not installed

So what can i do? Could i delete/replace some files or what? I'm kind of dummy when it comes to using DOS.

I'm using Finnish wME upgrade for w98 and the wME's version is 4.90.3000.

Hi, and welcome to the forums Pati.

I emailed you a reply, but I'll post part of it here again just in case anybody else needs it:

I'm not 100% sure of this, but i think what it's telling you is that for the Win ME version of DOS emm386 functionality has been embedded into command.com

so you may very well be able to use the sb16 emulation without trying to load emm386 (just use a semicolon at the beginning of that line to comment it out)

if that doesn't work for you, I would see if you can get a hold of a win98SE machine for a few minutes and make boot disk from win98 instead

since after having Dos i've gone through win 2., 3.0, 3.1 95, 98 and now WinME - i seemed to forgotten the syntax used in the auto bat and config files. I'm not sure how much of the PNP hardware needs to be addressed by device calls.
as far as sound, mouse and joy stick info.

using win ME i need a boot disk that leaves as much free conventional and ems memory as I can. I was looking at adding the 386emm file and device call but looking at pati's post and reply it may not help. mem maker in the old 95 was a help as it helped me determine the language and call for loading drivers into upper mem. doing that manaually seems to be another forgotten skill.

so far running the games under dos in win ME has failed and getting the syntax for having enough EMS has not worked. any ideas and suggestions?

use a win 98 boot disk to get into DOS (not 98se) . . every thing should still work fine if you can make a 98 boot disk based on the article

if you can lay your hands on a copy of memmaker, it should even still work under the 98 version of DOS if i recall correctly Confused

another way to go would be to see if you can locate a copy of OS/2 the DOS emulation under OS/2 was INCREDIBLE. as an added bonus most manufacturers are still writing drivers for OS/2

Very interesting pages. You mention SCSI CD-ROMs, but don't say what to do to get the boot disk to work with them. I need this help to restore a win95 machine. Is there a
generic SCSI CD-ROM driver I can add to the boot disk, and what lines do I need to add to CONFIG/AUTOEXEC to use it.
