I've had the DI-704 since Feb or March of 2001 and havn't had any problems with it. A couple of times I have tried to blame it for some problems I was having, but after some investigation could find no fault with it. @home seems to be the biggest problem with my network. :)

Not really sure how hot it runs as it is down in the basement on my patch-panel board. It does run 24/7 though and hasn't given me any grief. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a router/firewall with it's feature set.

Yes, it can run very hot, but if I keep it relatively exposed and not buried under papers and cables it runs warm...but even when it was buried and "fried egg hot" it never and I mean NEVER gave me a problem and since the body is all metal(something most others are NOT) it acts a bit of a heaksink...it's a great router either way!

I've got a DI-704, which I've owned for three months. I got it at Best Buy for a net $70 after rebate.

On an open wooden shelf, it ran about body temperature warm. I have since moved it into a 1U opening on a metal shelf in a 19" rack desk, along with its companion Cisco 678 DSL modem. Now it runs barely 2C above room temperature. I deliberately left off the little stick-on plastic feet to maximize the heat sinking property of the metal shelf. On the open wood shelf, the Cisco used to run plutonium warm. Now, even with the Cisco's plastic case and rubber feet, the metal shelf just wicks the heat out of it.

My experience with the 704 matches Rover's - I upgraded the firmware to 255b15 without incident, and it has worked flawlessly since day one. The only semi-exotic thing I do with it is run a VPN client, so I don't have any first-hand experience running servers, gaming or teleconferencing apps.

I bought it because it was priced right, and looked good in the box - something I almost never do.
I'm pleased, considering I didn't find a whole lot of technical reviewage on the 704 before buying.

Hi , I am new to broadband, next week actually, they are coming to hook me up with ADSL. I currently run three machines on my D-link DSS 5 10/100 switch with ICS. They stste that I get 2 dynamic IPs. So I'm a little confused here, do I need a router? How would it work with the dynamic IPs? Can this router be uplinked with my current switch if I do purchase this? Thanks.

I have this router and it works great, I only have one issue which hopefully someone here can help resolve.. I'm on a college network, however when using the DI-704 I'm no longer able to access network resources. Is there anyway I could make it so I'd be able fix this? I know a hub would have been a better pick, but I was able to pick this up for $10 so I'm hoping to make it work.

I went one higher and got the 707, which offers 7 ports instead of 4.

Still a GREAT device...I haven't noticed the heat, but I haven't touched it since installing it.
