Great article. Can't wait till i get a chance to test it out. I just downloaded the ISO's for mandrake and burning them right now. I definitly will use this article when I do the install. I will let you know how I do. Since I'm a Linux Dope, (just have a Unix Intro class to fall back on) I'm hoping my install is a good one.
Good Job!

I too just got the ISO's and am burning them at this moment. The article is amazing. I am a bit of Linux dummy, and whenever I installed Mandrake 7.2, I just used the default install. I was going to pick up the power pack at a local store here(Don't want to mail order from the states, the exchange is deadly right now!!), but version8.0 hasn't quite made it here yet. |

I have just one question for you. When you write an article that long, or any html with lots of text, do you write the text out, and then go back and add the html, or do you write it all(html + text) out at once. I write a lot of html at work, but almost all of it is tables. The largest block of text I have ever had to deal with is one paragraph sandwiched between two tables.
P.S. Thanks for showing other websites out there that no matter how long the article/guide is, it CAN fit on one page.

I don't know how Rover does it, but I write it all (html + text) as I go. Gotta be careful in Win9x though cuz notepad has a 35k limit (which I have hit before). DOH!

Don't I know it!! I have a javascript search engine which has four lines of text for each item. There are nearly 4000 items in the search engine. It is one page of html that is 612KB in size!! I have been using wordpad for it, but you have to make sure when you save that it is saved as a text file. Rover or Brain mentioned something about a notepad expander somewhere. I have been meaning to look for it.

I write it usually using Arachnophilia, it colors the tags and stuff so that it's earier to read. I also write the text and html simultaneously. I used to write it in Word so I could spellcheck, but I stopped that and I wish I didn't. Spelling errors have been slipping through. Win2K's notepad has no limit!!! Mandrake's "Advanced Editor" has all the power of a good word processor with none of the bullshit. Plus a spell checker, but it wasn't very good, too small of a dictionary.

Glad you liked it Ed...I spent a long time working on it. My favorite part is the Pictures, you don't see pics of the install process for any Linux distro very often if ever. Gotta love VMWare!

I was wondering how you took those screen caps. I meant to ask that earlier. Cool. |

The only problem I had was with the 'Bad Parts'. I find the ability to jump to the command line a blessing, not a curse. And if you want to change permissions, you don't have to jump to the command line. Just go to 'K/Applications/File Tools/File Manager (Super User Mode)' , change to the directory you want, right click on the file and select 'Properties' and then 'Permissions'. I'd have to say that jumping to the command line and issuing 'chmod 755 /directory/filename' is a touch easier |

I have to agree with you LineGod, the CL is a blessing not a curse, but only for us Linux geeks. Until a user knows what to do on the CL, it is a bit intimidating. How many computer users are there who use Windows who don't have clue about the DOS prompt? I'll wager quite a few. Of course the CL in Linux is completely different and infinitley more powerful than in Windows, a novice doesn't know that.
As for the file permission thing, I tried changing it from the GUI but it just didn't seem to work right. The particular directory was locked for some reason even though it resided within my user's home directory. I went to SuperUser mode in the file manager, but it still wouldn't let me. Very strange indeed, but a quick jump to the CL and viola it was fixed.

I hear that
not that i've use the CL in linux very often (remember BeOS)
but i don't think i've "tech sppt'd" a windows machine without leaving either a "command" or a "cmd" in thr run box in the last 5 years |

The article was pretty good, but what on earth did you do to those screenshots?! The colours were messed up badly. I'm running Mandrake 8.0 here myself, and was using 7.2 before that. This linux-distro is fabulous, and I heartily recommend it to newbies. |
