I know this has already been through more than once, but I was just curious about copper shims. Do they really work?? If so is one brand better than another?

Thanks

What I've read about shims, the answers to those 2 questions are No and No ... but they don't seem to hurt either ... I wouldn't use them myself ...

I've read of cases where the shim was just a little too thick, keeping the HS from making good contact with the CPU. Not a good thing.

I have never used one and probably never will. Like Ed said (hehehe a rhyme) if it's too thick - your CPU will fry in a heartbeat and if it's too thin - it's not doing anything for you.

Once you install a HSF on a Duron or a T-bird a few times - you'll never even want one of those things. If it is your first time - just take it slow.

i would never tell anyone they need a shim - - because they don't

but both of my celerons have shims on them

I made sure the shims weren't too thick and then i used a glue gun to stick them to the celeron permanently

i didn't do this because i think they need the shims . . I did it because sometimes I'm stupid, or drunk when i have my comps apart. . and this is just a little added protection

things you need to know tho:

make sure the shim is not too thick (put it on and look to see if you can see the core sticking up from the side)

make sure the damn thing isn't bent

if you have a duron, mare sure that sucker isn't being conductive with anything on the top of your cpu

don't glue your shim to your duron if you're planning on OC'ing

don't use anything conductive on your cpu if you are going to use a shim

does anyone else have any DO's or Do Not's Question
