Ummmm, 50c is not high. 49c is my max temp, never goes over that. That's while running SETI and playing a game. That is not high since Athlons have been known to go over 80c.
BTW, Liquid, you need to check out Dan's Data to see what temps are all about:
http://www.dansdata.com/coolercomp.htm
Take a look at those temps and you will see just how hard it is for anyone to believe that you are getting a consistent 30c temp while running a looping benchmark. I for one find it very hard to believe.

True, but you've gotta remember the role ambient temperature plays. It's all about the Delta T (difference between case/mobo and CPU temps for the uninitiated). I run about 20C DT, which I chalk up to poor incoming air flow due to the copious amounts of power connectors from my Enermax PSU. Once I get back to school and get all settled, I think I'll spring for some rounded cables so I can try and tame the beast.
Personal plans aside, I generally run about 50C as well, but my ambient temp usually hovers around 74-78F (23-25C). If Liquid's sitting at 15C with better ventilation than I, he might indeed be getting those 30C temps.

I'm kinda curious as to wether or not my temps are high. I'm running a t-bird 1.2 at 1.33, no big ocin here, but I've got a dorb3 with the 7000 rpm fan on it. I have 2 80mm fans on the front of my antec case, and 1 on the side and 2 on the back pushing air out. Currently, my temps are 47 and 31 ambient, which I think is high. I've rounded my floppy cables, but not my ide's. I'm gonna buy those ones. Anyhow, I'm wondering if these temps are considered high. Right now, all I'm running is SETI, but even when I play, temps stay about the same, and my house isn't hot either, so that should make somewhat of a difference.
Also been looking at water cooling. I'm in Canada, and am trying to find a kit I can order. Anyone have any suggestions? I emailed BigFootComputers, and they told me that they should be posting water kit hardware soon, but I'm wondering if anyone has any tips. I read a review somewhere basically telling me to stay away from the dangerden stuff, which is kinda too bad because I liked the look of it, but if it's not performing, then forget it.
If anyone has any ideas or comments, please let me know.

My ambient is a steady 69f. And I still get 49c. I see no way that he could be getting that without water cooling.

He might think hes getting those temps but theres no way in hell *pun intended* that he is.
I'm betting good money that the temperature probe in his cpu socket isnt making contact with the cpu.
But even then that does seem kinda low.
Heh, gives me something to try out tommorrow, move the probe around some.

Add one of these puppies to yer case... [^]
Not bad for less than $5 and a fixed shipping of $5, too! When my order gets here, I'm going to see if my plate holder will hold that puppy on... I'm going to see if it will run at 7V instead of 12V.

Quick update on my situation ...
Just adding one 80mm intake fan and switching to rounded IDE cables I dropped the temps from about 52C and 48C to 48C and 42C.
I may try one more intake fan and see what happens, but it may take a while for me to motivate myself enough to order another one. My credit cards are currently winning the race against my bank account. But thats what college is all about, isn't it?
One thing I might consider is that pre-made case mod with a small window and blow hole already built in that someone posted a link to recently. I liked that and it seems right up my alley since I'm way too lazy to break out a dremel and hack away at my case, plus this would be a nice little mod for it.
But back to cooling, I'll probably go for more soon. At least as soon as my wallet lets me. Thanks for all the tips too. I know I'm too cheap for watercooling right now, but in the future I'd love to play with it. And I think my heatsinks will be fine for now, but I don't have any arctic silver on there right now. I actually have a tube of it, just never actually applied it. So many things I still need to do to improve my cooling ...

If the case you're talking about is the Chemming style case, like the Antec performance series cases, these promote excellent air flow regardless of the window mod/fan. Another great feature of this case are the plastic 80mm fan holders, including a holder for attaching a fan to blow air over your hdd's. having a fan blowing outside air over the hsf can only help with cooling. Excellent case design. Will allow you to run with cooler case temps. If you get it, make sure you move one of the fans to the front of the hard drive cage. Another thing, I can't see numerical results from this because this case moves air so well anyway, but I had the option of upgrading the psu unit to a dual fan antec 350 for $15 more, it moves considerably more air through the case.
I also like the Fong Kai 320. It also blows air over the hsf, though I don't like the design quite as well. It uses a hooded fan to take air from the back and direct it so it blows down on the hsf. Cheaper than having to cut a hole in the side panel and attach a fan to it but not quite as effective. Since it's bringing the air in from the back of the case, if you have it backed up next to a wall or cubicle it can end up pulling in the warm air leaving the power supply unit. I've built several with this case and get good cooling, it just works better when it has plenty of room behind case to draw in outside air.
The 320 might just be able to zip bam pow that monster 120mm fan as a front intake or exhaust though I don't think it would fit under the hood that sits above the cpu socket. That is a pretty big fan, you'll have to let us know if the lights dimmed when you tried it out, or would that be, - bam | zip | pow - how things get done in the dark?
PS Bam
If you're going to order more of those monster fans, also checkout the Ultra Cool HDD Cooler they have for $8. It consists of a metal housing & 90mm fan which can attached to 3.5 or 5.25 drive cage, 12" 2 lead(no rpm wire)power and includes a 3 to 4 pin converter for using psu lead instead of mainboard power. I've tried several methods for cooling hdd and haven't liked most because they use little noisy fans on a hunk of aluminum. I find this approach of blowing air up or down onto the drive from a 90mm fan much quieter and more effective.
I got the plate holder to work on the Thermalright CB6L, I need to play with it some, I saw the hangers come in 3 sizes, maybe the big one will work with that 120 . I haven't put it into production yet (my first try managled it a bit), but it has a future though I wouldn't call it a secure attachment.

I bought an SLK-800 about a 3-4 weeks ago. I got it with a Y.S. Tech 80mm fan (~45 CFM, 3800 RPM), slapped it in and was finally able to achieve the last 66.6 MHz of overclock that I'd been trying for since I bought my board and CPU 18 months ago. It also cut my CPU temp down by 15+ degrees F over the no-name copper thin-fin heatsink and 5700 RPM 60mm Y.S. Tech combo I'd been using before. It ROCKS and isn't any louder than what I had on there before. Highly recommend it! |

80mm to 120mm fan adapters have to be too crazy... Wonder what that will do for air movement with one of those monster fans? Guess the noise would drown out most screams... Won't be back to El Paso for at least another week to try out my experiments. Still stuck here in LA for at least 4 more days. I wonder how loud my case will be with 4 of those babies in there... During my quick visit to Phoenix, I was able to get my hands on a working water fountain chiller unit for free from an elementary school they were tearing down in Scottsdale.
Wonder if anyone else has tried using something like that in their cooling setup? It already has it's own AC power cord and has a pretty good water reserve built in it. It's about the same size as a mini tower case. Does anyone know how good it would perform for water cooling for my comp? I guess I could always use it for chilling water for the fridge (my fridge doesn't chill the water for the dispenser...
I'm sure there are more units in the school but most of the school is already torn down.

Wow...these 120mm fans are kinda fun. Got them running at 7V without any problems and it sounds more like a whooshing sound now instead of the high speed 60mm super wound up fans. They didn't want to run at 5V but that's okay...

BamZipPow, thanks for posting about www.nexfan.com great site with great prices on fans and some other misc. items. Their $3.99 Galaxy HDD cooler buy 2 get 1 FREE looks like a bargain. Put in an order for an assortment of $2 and under case fans and was surprised to find a 6' USB A to B for $2.50. I just had a friend get a Cannon all in one printer\copier for her husband and was getting tired of him bitching about no USB cable with it (though he loves the unit)....... though he does have a point, why Canon didn't put in a USB cable is short-sighted, instead of leaving the customer amazed at what a fantastic product they leave 'em complaining about finding & buying a USB cable. Now I will have a spare USB cable again |
