Yeah, Fahrenheit. I'm talking Celsius here.

heres a link to a shroud you may want to try over your cpu http://www.crazypc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=120199&Product_Code=4029

i have one of these in my case, i replaced the crapass 17cfm fan with a 32cfm antec, which is gonna be replaced by a 50 cfm sunon once my stuff gets here

I have done a little research about my reported temps.
They seem to be absolutely ok.

Overclockers.com has done a review here
of my Swiftech MCX462A HSF. According to them the average C/W is at 0.30 for this HSF.

Interpreting C/W: For every watt the CPU radiates, the heatsink will cool the core by the
(C/W x watts) plus ambient temp. For example, at an ambient temp of 25 C, a C/W of 0.25
with a CPU radiating 50 watts means that the CPU temp will be 50 x 0.25 = 12.5 C over ambient temp (DELTA), or 37.5 C. The lower the C/W, the better.

Delta = CPU temp - Ambient Temp
C/W = Delta / CPU Watts

The Intel P4 2.4 has a heat outpout of 57.8W according to Intel's thermal specification sheet.
My ambient case temp is around 29-30°C (~84-86F). It's a hot day today.
My CPU core temp is at 45°C (113F) full load for 20h.

Using the above equation:
CPU Watts * (C/W) => 57.8W * 0.30 = 17.34°C (63.21F)(DELTA)
Casetemp + DELTA => 29.5°C(85.1F) + 17.34°C(63.21F) = 46.84°C (116.31F) (CPU core temp)

This leads to the conclusion that my C/W is even better than the mentioned 0.30. It is
Delta = CPU temp - Ambient temp => 45°C (113F) - 29.5°C (85.1F) = 15.5°C (59.90F)
Delta / CPU Watts => 15.5°C / 57.8W = 0.26 C/W

Even as my CPU is slightly overclocked (+210MHz) the heat dissipation shouldn't have increased (heat dissipation doesn't raise by o/c'ing but by raising the voltage IIRC)

Also Overclockers.com have tested the HSF with a bigger fan, a 80mm Delta w/ 68CFM. I only use a 80mm w/ 38CFM, thereby the C/W value should be higher(worse), but it isn't.

I am completely happy with my temps, I may get lower temps (and a less noisy case) with liquid cooling, but I have to get deeper into the subject before starting to buy the components needed.

45°C is not a terrible core temperature for a 2.4 GHz processor, and a 16° rise of core vs. motherboard is not bad. However, I would have expected you to get better results with that huge Swiftech heatsink and the 38cfm Sunon fan. That really is a top-notch heatsink.

Heat generation does go up (roughly linearly) with clock frequency. CPU heat generation also increases with the square of voltage.
V = Voltage
I = Current
R = Resistance
Ohm's law: V = IR
Power: P = VI
Therefore: P = V²/R

:pawa1: more useless details to remember.

Remember SOS, Workin = Workout.

If you raise the freq. you're doing more workout therefore workin has to go up to compensate.

All you have to do is look at intel data sheets and you should be able to extrapolate your power consumption at the new freq.

Your Heat disapation coeffecient (c/w) will vary a little depending on:
Ambient air of the HSF
Flowrate
Cleanliness of transfer medium, (fins)
Your bond between the HS and the CPU die.

Knowing this, you can kind of picture thermodynamically, what is going on in and around your HSF combo.

One more thing that JAE talked about was I²R losses. That really is Heat being rejected. That's why he said that as freq. rises, power consumption will rise approx lineary. But if you crank the core voltage up, (remember, P=I²R), Heat production will increase quite a bit more.

Thanks JAE!

Let that be a lesson to you pups at there. Run your Vcore as low as you can get away with..

WOOF!

seems to me that if you simply make the room airtight, and then put in a couple air conditioners, turned to max... that would solve allot of your problems really quickly!

fathertyme is soooo long to type out, and ft just doesn't cut it.
Now cheesy, that seems to just roll off the fingertips.

But as we all know the P4 even lowers the voltage when running full power, that should give me also a little room.

I will extrapolate the real CPU Watts, but not now. It's too early (6:50 am) to do math.

OK SOS you may now bite the puppies. Just don't leave any lasting scars. It ruins their show value..
