Hrbib21--
Here's an update on my second PC (I am still happy with the configuration of my primary system):

This may be hard to believe: New stuff is so cheap and performs so well that I haven't felt the need to overclock it (yet). I gave away the Duron-750 on which I had cut bridges and penciled in new ones to run it at 7x133. A new AthlonXP 1800+ for about $100 at stock speed provides plenty of zip without overclocking.

I have experimented with a number of case fans. The most recent installation was a bunch of Vantec Stealth fans. They don't move a lot of air but they are very quiet. The noisiest elements in my PCs now are a pair of Western Digital 1200JB 7200rpm hard-drives in one and a trio of 50mm fans that I am using for case exhaust in the other. One of my PC cases is nearly full, so heat from items other than the CPU is a concern. I have recently purchased (but not yet installed) an 80x25mm Sanyo Denki fan with a rheostat (knob) for speed control. I may try this on top of the Alpha PAL-8045 or ThermalTake Volcano7 coolers rather than using it for case ventilation, although I may have to put a noisier fan back in to move more air than one of the Stealth fans does. With the stock thermally-controlled variable speed 80x25mm fan, the Volcano7 allows the AthlonXP 1800+ to warm to 53°C while the case is 35°C. This is up from a 28°C case temp before I added a few more PCI cards to this box. The Volcano7 with its quiet 80mm fan outperforms the Alpha PAL-6035 that I had been using with a fairly-quiet 4500rpm 60mm fan.

Why is this box getting hot? Here are a few contributors:
Primitive Antec KS280B mid-tower case with 350W PP-352X (This case is not designed nearly as well as their SX-series cases)
Asus A7M266, AthlonXP 1800+, Volcano7, 384MB PC2100 (CAS 2)
The A7M266 has one AGP and 5 PCI slots. They are full.
Voodoo5-5500 AGP (this is a BIG card with two graphics chips)
On-board CMI-8738 sound
Creative ModemBlaster 56K PCI
IWill SideRAID100 PCI (uses Highpoint 372 chip)
Adaptec 2940UW PCI (40MB/s SCSI)
Intel Pro 10/100+ PCI
ATI TV Wonder VE PCI
Combination 3½+5¼" floppy disk drive
Toshiba SD1402 DVD-ROM
2x40GB IBM 60GXP 7200rpm hard-drives in a RAID-0 stripe
60GB Maxtor 5400rpm ATA66 hard-drive
4GB IBM Deskstar SCSI-UW hard-drive
1½GB SyQuest SyJet SCSI-U removable hard-drive
Six drive interface ribbon cables of various types
Fans blowing in: one each 80mm & 92mm Vantec Stealth
Blowing out: Power supply (thermally-controlled) + 3 each 50x10mm 5500rpm
I may move the Plexwriter 12/10/32A into this machine temporarily while I mail off the motherboard out of my main PC for RMA (on-board RAID controller problem).

I'm overclocking my P4 1.6A to 2.4 right now. I'm just waiting on a better heatsink than the crappy stock one before I try going any higher.

[blue]I'm not overclocking my CPU anymore, but that's more due to the particular motherboard I'm using. I don't overclock my duallie box, I don't overclock my file server, and I don't overclock the Abit NV7-133R (not many options anyway). I do overclock my GF3 tho. I did have it up around 250/571 core/mem, but dropped the mem a touch to 559 cuz the slight artifcating was getting irritating.

How about "gee, you've sure got that badly-designed case crammed full of obsolete junk and too many drive cables--it's no wonder that you're having heat problems..."?

I mean, who else is still using a 4GB 5400rpm SCSI hard-drive, or still has a 5¼" floppy drive (Epson 3½+5¼" combo, circa 1993)? And the SyJet? Hasn't SyQuest been out of business for four or five years? Let's not even talk about 3dfx (former TDFX stock owner here). If I didn't want to keep the SCSI scanner, I would probably pitch all of the old SCSI stuff.

The Creative/DSI modem has been a problem with the A7M266--sometimes it causes the PC to reboot when it is first accessed. I have observed this same behavior with another identical modem on an identical motherboard. I almost picked up an open-box slightly-used SupraExpress V.90 external this week for under $65, but I decided against it.

Wow; that's a nice memory OC. From what I understand, though, any artifacting is an indication of excessive heat, which in turn can damage your card...I'm sure it's thankful you backed it down a notch [Wink]

I'm currently not OCing my processor because I was too damn lazy to unlock the thing...does anybody know where I can get conductive silver ink like THG used (with the brush and all)? When I do, I'm just going to up it to 2000+ speeds and be happy with that.

I voided the warranty on my video card about six hours after I had it...I'm currently running it at 300/520 (the GPU is at Ti4600 speeds, and the memory is at the Gainward Enhanced Settings speed to ensure stability). My 3DMark score went up about 400 points and my games are still CPU limited, so I have to say I'm pleased.

I personally choose stability over raw speed simply because any gains someone else might by pushing it to the edge are so minor as to not be worth it in my book. Though I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those P4 1.6As somewhere down the road Tongue Smile....

------
things on my mind.

Well, here's my 'budget box' that I set up a couple of months ago:

ECS K7S5A mobo w/hacked BIOS
Duron 950 (Morgan core) @ 1.1Ghz
400W Antec Power Supply
384Mb Samsung CAS2.5 PC2100 DDR @ CAS2
20Gb Maxtor D740 HD @ UDMA/100
Old 400Mb IBM HD (used for pagefile only)
Generic 52x CD-ROM
Excalibur GeForce 2 MX 400 @ 226/349 core/mem
3Com 10/100 NIC
On-board AC'97 Audio
Plain(ish) full ATX case

Cooling equipment:

Taisol CGK760092 HSF
2 x 80mm case fans (1 intake, 1 exhaust)
Reseated GF2 heatsink and added an old Pentium fan
VGA heatsinks
Replaced crappy SiS chipset heatsink with copper HSF from an old Pentium box.

Unfortunately even with the hacked BIOS (courtesy of OC Workbench) there is no way to change the CPU multiplier other than doing a bridge mod on the Duron, SiS didn't include the option for changing the multiplier with their 735 chipset.

Originally I set the FSB to 112Mhz in the BIOS, but the system wouldn't POST. I had to use CPUFSB to set it to 110Mhz (10 x 110). The hacked BIOS did have it's uses though, it opened up hidden memory settings that allowed me to run the RAM faster. Surprisingly, the moderately priced Samsung RAM runs all of the RAM settings at their fastest settings without even flinching. The only problem I had whilst overclocking the CPU was that the chipset kept overheating, so I removed the flimsy SiS heatsink (which was only held on with double-sided tape) and attached an old Pentium copper HSF with Arctic Silver 2 epoxy.

Shortly after buying the GF2 I decided to see how far I could take it with NVMAX. It went to 215/333 core/mem but any further and I started seeing artefacts. After reseating the heatsink with some Arctic Silver 2 epoxy and fitting a fan it went to 226/333. I fitted some VGA heatsinks and it went to 226/349 (default speeds are 175/300).

All in all, this isn't a bad box for under £500 (US$730). It plays all my games with decent performance and overall feels very fast and responsive.

I'm getting an Epox 8K3A+ and an XP1900 soon, I can't wait to see how far they will go.

EDIT: The software I used to change the multiplier is called CPUFSB not SoftFSB. It's a little program that allows you to change the FSB frequency from within Windows.

As soon as my new box is here (soemtime next week, I will o/c the crap out of it.

The system will be a P4 2.53GHz (Northwood with Crucial 512MB DDR-RAM (certified to 185MHz clocking - PC3000) on a ASUS P4S533 board.

From what I have been told it should be no problem to bring it above 3 GHz stable.

As soon as the box is running I will post stats ans things...

MUAHAHA

Most people do not know how to behave in a massacre.
