I went from a Western Digital 10 GIG ATA/66 to a MAXtor 20 GIG ATA/100 and I noticed quite a bit of difference. I have the ASUS A7V with the Promise ATA 100 controller built on to the board and it runs great. Probably 15-25% faster at certain times. |

Max,
I think your improvement was due to stepping up to the maxtor drives, not to the diffrence between ata 100 and 66 I have some WD drives myself, and they are sick puppies compared to my Maxtor in ata 33 and 66 Im not using 100 so I can't remark there

In regards to the Maxtor vs. Western Digital or any other drive for that matter, spindle speed aka RPMs can have a significant impact on speed. But there are drives out there that have slow rpms that still keep up with faster drives! Also Maxtor has some compatability issues with the HighPoint controller, ATA100 model HPT370! Is everyone aware that Maxtor has bought Quantum!? That could have a major impact on the Maxtor line!

What about the new IBM 75GXP drives? Are they worth purchasing? |

I think the Maxtor/Quantum thing was for Quantum's SCSI drives. Maxtor has no SCSI options IIRC. |

We actually have a 75GXP (20 Gig) model in the mail that we will be giving away in an upcoming contest! Keep your eye's open!

Brain/Rover - My data was based on the following fact. I had a new ATA/100 capable hard drive on the ATA/66 controller in my system. I experimented for a while with it on that controller, I then hooked it up to my ATA/100 controller and that is where I saw the increase. Obviously the RPM's didn't change. I do agree with Rover that RPM's make a huge difference. I disagree with Brain, the Maxtor was purely a pricing judgement call and I would never in my life take a Maxtor over a Western Digital.
I heard nothing but great things about the IBM 75GXP drives. |

Except for the compatibility issue I'd say Maxtors make a damn good drive and with the way WD has been lately I'd take Maxtor any day. WD seems to have slipped on R&D lately, they used to lead with largest and fastest but they are not today and it's ashame! Besides everyone has 3 year warranties so why not go Maxtor?

I don't have an opinion on the type of drives you use, and I don't own an ATA 100 drive, but here is the only screen cap I have ever seen on an ATA 100 drive using Sandra.
It's wayyy at the bottom of the page.

So to answer your original question: I think it's worth it.

I heard nothing but great things about the IBM 75GXP drives.
Maxtor is turning out higher quality drives these days in my opinion I have 3 WD's ( one of which was my GF-choker from another thread)and 1 Maxtor which is ata66/100 ( you have to download something from the website to switch upto ata 100 even tho the drive electronics are enabled )
The maxtor drive has been very good to me and it never had any problems when I was using the hpt controller. which is definitely not something I can say about the WD drives.
On another note from this thread I'm tickled pink that Maxtor bought Quantum . Quantum used to be my preferred MFR ( they were the most widely available/reliable where I lived back in the day ) and it's a good thing to hear that their product survival is guaranteed, even if it lives on under a new name !
BTW my old preference for Q is not a slight on IBM They make great drives, and are ESPECIALLY kickass in raid setups. Mmmmm Dual channel 75 gig ide raid IBM Deskstars..... sooooo Tasty [ ]
