I need to spec boxes for a render farm, we're modeling with StudioMax and adding Discreet's Mental Ray.. What CPU will give me the best performance ray trace rendering?
(Mental Ray will run on PC & Unix)
Where can I find benchmarks?

Notice how the AthlonXP 2100+ outruns the Pentium4 2.4A in this test. It makes you wonder about Intel's new campaign against AMD's model numbering scheme.

Thanks squito! There seems to be indication that the P4's are not yet running at their full potential? Is this performance just pure chip speed or does the L2 chache become a factor? Is the Athlon performing better because of the 3Dnow! (or whatever the newest version is) even though it has only a 256k L2? & I'll squeze one more question in here.. is it that the 3Dnow! data set eliminates recursive lookups back to the software?

the PIV cores were designed to "ramp up the MHZ' at will
if you look at them on a "clock for clock" basis, they actually underperform even the p3's
Kind of a nice little Scam Intel has going on there . . . huh |

Not to start a cpu flame war here, but I don't think it matters that "clock for clock" they underperform a P3 or Athlon. Absolute performance is all that matters.
Check out some of the hardware sites that benchmark they cpus and see which one renders the fastest with 3dsm. I believe that the highest end model P4 outperforms the highend Athlon right now. But that could change with new cpus shipping. |
