I don't know if you guys know this one. I hate all the windows software that gets loaded on install. In win2K you don't even get the option to customize it during the install. You have to do it after using the add/remove programs applet. Half of the things I wanted to remove were not listed in the windows section of the add/remove dialog. Then I found this on the web.

Open the file sysoc.inf in your winnt/inf/ folder. Delete every occurence of the word hide and the comma after it, save the file(Back it up first). Now check the windows tab of the add/remove software dialog, there should be way more things listed there.

Too bad one of the new choices isn't the ability to "Add/Remove IE integration" It's also too bad that powerdesk can't run as the shell

IE would DIE a horrible screaming death !

Have you guys ever used 98Lite?? Wouldn't it be nice if Shane Brooks would create a Win2K version of 98Lite.

In case your not familiar with 98Lite, it is a little program that allows you to remove IE from Win98. It also allows you to remove a lot of other crap like Dr watson etc. If you want to use IE, you just reinstall it off of the net without integration(Or so I 've heard, in win98 I use netscape).

I've used a couple of diffrent tools for that, with 98. But they never really seemed to speed anything up. ( O'Reilly made a decent one) one thing that I HAVE found that you can get to keep some windows problems at bay is downloading POWERDESK 4.0 from http://www.ontrack.com/PowerDesk/ and using IT instead of exploder for file management (you can even make it the default "explorer" for file management, but it won't surf the web ) you can download a FREE version there, but in my opinion it's much sweeter to get the FULL version, and all it's Bells/Whistles for only $19.95

Oh, BTW if you install IE 4 or higher it DOES make itself the default shell for windows ( no choice ) you just have to go back and change it manually, or use something to do it for you. This doesn't really stop the integration, it just sort of gives you and "End Around"

Well I've actually bought 98Lite and let me tell you it rocks. There is also a 98LiteME which as I'm sure you can guess works with WindowsME. Anyways, there are two options with 98Lite, install it to the a directory containing the windows cab files and then running setup or after Windows is installed running it and having everything you ever wanted to be able to deinstall listed in the Add/Remove programs window. Supposedly Shane has installed Windows98 and it was only like 17MB big!!! That's what I call Windows on a diet!!! I think I'm going to do a review of 98Lite just for giggles!

Sorry to bump an old topic, but I just had to agree with the stuff here. 98lite is a superb program. I bought it, too. After using it for a Micro install my box booted to the desktop in < 20 seconds, and when shutting down I didn't even see the shutdown screen. 2 seconds after hitting Return my box was powered off.

As for IE4 taking over, it only sets itself as the default shell if you choose that nonsensical Active Desktop crap during install. If you install IE5 on a stripped 98lite machine it doesn't take over the shell.

You can get it at http://www.98lite.net/ - version IV is out, which does Windows Me.

I tried it, and it worked pretty smoothly for winME

If i weren't already running an "end around" on my Seti-boxes that have winME on them, i'd probably go back and use 98 lite to slash IE.

I also bought 98Lite, way back in about version 2.something. Now I exclusively use Win2K. If shane ever creates a 98Lite for Win2K, I will be one happy puppy.

Just thought I would mention this. I was over at 98Lite and noticed in their FAQ that they have been working on a windows 2000 version. It is still in development, and development is currently stalled on it, however, they claim that they will return to it soon.

COol. I've been waiting for this for a long time. I still use 98Lite version 4 with Win98 for my dual boot. I have the micro install with opera 6.02 installed, and it is smooth and fast. I look forward to being able to chop out the crap in win2k that I don't like as well.
