this problem is driving me nuts. i got ahold of a MSI GeForce2 Ti-Pro-MTG VIVO card. its pretty awesome, plays all kinds of games like max payne, counter strike and half life. only problem iw when it tries to play games usint the quake 3 engine. Games such as Metal of Honor, Quake 3, and RTCW are constantly locking my computer after about the first 5 seconds - 2 mins of gameplay. I could browse the menus for hours but as soon as i play the game, it locks up. I am running on a fresh install of winXP but this problem originally started to happen on Win2k. It deos it whether or not the 4-in1 drivers for my MSI K7T266 Pro 2 mobo. i have even tried all of the drivers for the video card including various versions of the detinator xp drivers. i even tried the ones that said "tested by MSI" on them. so now im begging you for help. oh great gods of the card, help me with my problem and you shall receive a cookie. |

When you tested all those different drivers, did you remove the previous versions before installing the new ones... installing these drivers properly depends on making sure every last bit of the previous version is gone :
P.S. Welcome to the LWD Forums !!!

sure did. didnt help at all. the only thing that seemed to help for some time was the fact that i didnt install the 4in1's on the second install of xp. but that solution quickly went into the trash the second time i tried to play moh...
btw, thanks. i have read the forums some but never decided to register. i need something to keep me busy while the [H] is "down for maintence". dont worry, i love running with the big dogs |

sure did. direct x 8.1. only problem is that the quake 3 engine uses open gl. so does counter strike but it runs flawlessly. i am pretty sure it isnt a problem with open gl. i think it has something to do with the quake 3 engine itself. its really pissing me off because i cant play any of these really cool games. |

what bitrate are you using ?
I noticed that if i don't specify 16 bit color the machine I'm playing RTCW on has a lot of problems
celery 600@692
128 meg ram
winme
voodoo 3k
the default setting when i went into the config was "same as desktop" which meant it was autodetecting . . and i think that was what was crashing me (desktop was 16bit as well, but the detecting was where it seemed to be crashing)
it's not my machine . . just a little something i'm putting together for someone, but i'm guessing i'd have the same thing if I played it on mine
dual 700's
256 meg
voodoo 3k
win2k

but why would it only happen when using the quake 3 engine? it happens in every thing that uses the quake 3 engine and only the q3 engine. a guy i work with said that i whould go to www.glsetup.com and see if it can fix it. i will try it when i get home and see if it helps. |

Uh . . . you didn't answer my question sir ?
besides, GLsetup won't work for XP . . . only 9x
there is a decent GL mini driver for voodoo based cards made by metabyte . . . i use it for all of my supported games under win2k and it's fantastic (and only cost me like 7 bucks)

just tried bitrate trick to no help. i think it may have something to do with my ddr ram. i have 256 of pc 2100 but it benchmarks horribly low. like in the 800's..., it should be up there with the 2100's or eve clsoe to that. i dont know what to do. al my latencies are set as low as they can go. it just doesnt make sense. |

My system barely warms up playing Q2 ... playing Q3A is another story ... the highest system temps I've seen are right after playing a match ... this reminds of all the crap I went through with my TNT card ... thank God there were Voodoos card back then ...
P.S. have you tried reseating the video card?

yep, tried that. besides, i ask this question again, why would the video card not seated correctly only coincidentally affect quake 3 engine powered games? |

Here's a crazy thought...what kind of cooling does your video card have? Does it have any decent active cooling for the video chipset? My oldest brother (not Daniel D. Poon...he's my second oldest brother) had lockup problems with graphic intensive programs...uh, games. Ended up pulling the epoxied heatsink off of the card and stuck a blue orb on there. Now he's cruising without any lockups anymore. Oh...and I put some Artic Silver II between the chip and the blue orb. Just a thought...

That's the same question I asked they told me to make sure the TNT was seated 100% in the AGP slot ... they said something about all the connections doing different jobs ... didn't help me either, but I've seen cards that were only in 95% of the way act like this ...

well, i always make sure my vid cards are 100% seated. this mother board even has the clip to keep it seated.
im running stock cooling on the vid card. it has a little fan on it. my system temps always run at around 33-36c |
