Do you have someone you can borrow a GF2 card from just to see if it's the card or your setup? Or maybe someone else's comp you could test your card in?
BTW...forgot to mention that the epoxied HS on the card only had about 10% actual contact with the video chip. Have you peeked underneath that thing to see how good the contact is?

actually, no i havent taken a peak yet. but it does seem to get exceptionally hot on the back side of the card ( i didnt feel like laying down to get to the front side and touch the hsf). i think my problem may lie in the heat. ill have to try my card in my friends comp, he has the same setup cept for graphics card. |

Hold the card up to a light and look between the HS and the chip. Most likely you'll see some serious daylight between the two. You'll have to be very careful in separating those babies if they've epoxied them together. There is a remote possibility that you could kill your card. I just used a sharp edged knife (baby Spyderco) to wedge it between the gap. What ever you do...DON'T try to pry it apart. Just keep going around it with the knife until it separates. You might be able to use nail polish remover to loosen it up.
Of course if it isn't epoxied you don't have anything to worry about except to get some thermal grease and a decent HSF on it...

it wasnt epoxied, it uses plastic clips. when i popped it off, there was very little thermal greases so i grabbed my artic silver II and slapped it on making sure to cover the whole gpu with a thin layer, then i put the hsf back on. i managed to find an old, long heat sink for an old pentinum that would work great for ram sinks for the vid card. i just gotta cut it in half and figure out how to mount it. now im off to test and see if the artic silver helped any. |
