On Ubuntu, do you get the option of creating a new Gnome session from the logon screen? (Usually it's set to "use last session.") Might be another thing to try.

I got a real crazy question what makes you think that graphics display is not out of range?

When I ran Ubuntu on my laptop I had to go into the gdm the graphics display mode and select a generic video display to get the Ubuntu to display..... I had a green screen with mouse pointer and a brown screen with a mouse pointer even a gray screen with mouse pointer now most of the newer linux flavors I've ran in the past week or so don't give a warning telling me my graphics are out of range...

Weird but haven't ran Linux in about 2 or 3 years.....

This being a just released version to me your outside of range for display...

Also checkout furoms from Ubuntu they got a lot of same problems you might be able to post this question and get better help......

Good luck....

later.....

Far as ur permissions go I don't know about this.....

Because the graphical login screen works just fine. If X wasn't working, you wouldn't get that far.

No, still no luck... Tonight I tried your suggestion:

Code: Select all
sudo usermod -d /home/lyonsm lyonsm

sudo chown -R lyonsm /home/lyonsm
sudo chmod 755 /home/lyonsm
sudo rm -rf /home/lyonsm/.dmrc

and still the same results - upon login I get a blank screen with a movable pointer, and nothing to click on.

When you get to this point, can you press ctrl-alt-f1 and post the output of:

Code: Select all
$  ps -ef | grep gnome-panel

Only time will tell for sure, but I think I may be (finally) on the right path...

Thinking about it logically, the fact that SAMBA was still working, as was Galleon, and even PyTivo (when started via ssh - in fact the fact that SSH was working), made me suspect it was the GUI - Gnome.

So for giggles and grins, tonight, from the SSH console, I decided to try reinstalling Gnome by doing 'sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop' and it responded that a prior setup had failed, and that I needed to use 'dpkg --configure -a' to fix it.

I did that, and it appears to be working, rebuilding the GUI (at least best as I can tell from the SSH window). I figure I won't know if it worked for sure until the install finishes. But I have a good feeling about this one.

Well the other main command to fix a broken update on a Debian based system is

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install -f

What do you want explained?
