Post Posted: Sun Dec 30, 2007 3:12 pm   Post subject: HP Notebook screen problem (buggin the crap outta me) Reply with quote Back to top

hey guys you guys might remember my internet in safe mode problems but since then i trashed that piece o crap (in other words, gave it to my sister) and i got an HP Pavilion dv6605us Entertainment Notebook PC.

my problem is that occasionaly when im surfing the web or playing some of my games, my computer screen suddenly turns a solid color with jaged lines running through it and its really corrupted and unusable. i have a workaround which involves just shutting it and then opening it after its gone into hibernation mode. I would be ok except it happens when playing BF2142 and i get disconnected.

ADDITIONALLY it also locks up (with sounds playing) and then the screen goes blank and sounds keep playing. After a minute the sounds stop and im forced to hold the button down and restart. Once or twice its actually gone to a blue screen and showed the problem file. i however dont have enough time to find out the exact name but i think its pointing to my nvidia graphics driver.

The blank screen issue happens only when surfing, mainly when im on youtube. The screen corruption happens when surfing any site (again, mainly youtube) AND playing games.

My laptop specs are...

Windows Vista Home premium

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual core TK-55 1.8ghz

Nvidia Geforce Go 7150M 256

1gb RAM

160gb HD

and thats all im sure you guys need to know.

the games that are problems are : Battlefield 2142, Flight Simulator 2002, Sims:Life stories, and Warcraft III.

The only thing that NEVER messes up is Supreme Commander. Its never had issues. Even my browser seems to mess up but not that one game. hmmmmmmm

sorry for an especialy long post but i want to fix this and really start using this new notebook.

Well, get back to us when you can spare the five seconds it takes to read the file name from the blue Stop Error screen.

A quick gander at Google suggests that this is not an unknown problem. Plenty of people are complaining on the Nvidia forums about blue screens in Vista.

The symptoms you describe suggest a driver issue. If you aren't already running the latest drivers it's worth trying them to see if the problem has been fixed. It may also be worth submitting a problem report to Nvidia.

ok... unchecked that on my system... now to see if I even get a blue screen the next time my system pukes. mine always just dumps to a hard reset it seems. how the hell does software pull a hard reset? (I'm suspecting a driver issue with either USB or Video cause I have a bunch of USB stuff and a separate capture card along with the video card).

*screams and smashes head on desk*

google really didnt help. There were some good fixes but they didnt apply to me. Trying hotfixes did no good, mostly because my system says it doesnt need to run them. I have disabled windows update from getting drivers automaticly as it seemed that might be the cause of a potential problem. The issue im having with the screen flipping out seems pretty uncommon though, cant find much on google. Im going to test bf2142 for a bit and see where we go. I might try disabling the vista theme temporarily. Ill get back in a bit... but any ideas would be nice. Ive done just about all i can so im just goin down the list. Any ideas?

As I think more on this...you could have a bad video card. Not sure if yers is intergrated into the mobo or like some Dell laptops, you can pull and replace them. Just a thought... Wink SmileBig Smile

meh... mine popped up the BSOD for "ntfs.sys page_fault_in_nonpaged_area"

after searching around for troubleshooting tips... I've found that it could be the power supply... bad connections on the RAM... among other randomness

hosed down the RAM and sockets with some contact cleaner and blew all the dust out that I could... also found out that power supplies should be within 5-6% of rated values on the 3.3, 5, and 12 volt rails. guess what... my power supply is about 9-10% off on ALL of those... gee... maybe I need a new power supply. GRRR... anyone know of a good 400W supply that doesn't cost over $50?

yeah... I was looking at that one too... we'll see if it's the ram having dusty contacts... if the problem continues (which if the 5-6% off rule is true about power supplies... it should still be a problem) I'll swap out the PS and hope for the best.

and bugger me if that PSU isn't out of stock unless you wanna pay 2-3 times as much for it as what newegg sells it for. Mad

edit: yeah... and the 450 watt is on sale for just $3 more than the 400 watt. so I bought the 450.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182075

so hopefully this will fix the randomness issues I've been having.
