Dear fathertyme,

The SETI@home team has achieved much progress in the past year. We have
successfully started the next phase of SETI@home by distributing data recorded
with the new seven beam data recorder. This data is being analyzed with a new
"Multi-beam" version of SETI@home, which was released in July. With the new
data recorder, we are looking at seven places in the sky simultaneously while
recording fourteen times as much data as before. This means we need more
volunteers like you to help us process this data. So please, tell a friend
about SETI@home.

But there is still far more to be done. Although we are pleased with the
success of last winter's funding drive, and grateful for the generosity of our
donors, we are still operating with minimal funds. These budget constraints
have forced us down to less than 3 full time employees. With more funds we
hope to hire an additional person to maintain the servers and web site. This
would free our existing employees to work on a method of sifting through the
results returned by your computers in order to identify candidates more
rapidly so we can re-observe them. This rapid response validation system would
also give you the ability to see the results your computers have returned in
more detail.

To keep SETI@home operating for the next year, and to provide these new
capabilities, we will need to raise approximately $476,000. Currently
SETI@home is entirely funded by donations from people like you.

We hope that you will consider making a donation to SETI@home at this time.
You can make a secure donation by credit card by clicking on the link at the
top of this e-mail. Instructions for donation by check or money order are
there as well. Unless you specify otherwise, your donation will be noted by a
star icon next to your username on the SETI@home pages and your username will
appear on our list of donors. If you do not wish to have this recognition you
may indicate that as well. Please be assured that regardless of whether or not
you choose to have your donation be anonymous, SETI@home will not share your
address with other organizations.

You can check on our fundraising progress by visiting our main site at
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu.

Thank You,

Charles H. Townes
(Nobel Laureate, Inventor of the Laser and Optical SETI Pioneer)
Dan Werthimer
(Chief Scientist, SETI@home)

That's one thing I hate about making non-anonymous donations to any sort of charity (forgive me for getting a little cynical here) - once I've donated once, they seem to think they need to remind me to donate again. And again. And again.

I wish they would all just understand that if I'm going to donate to a charity I support, I'll do it WITHOUT their prodding. If anything, their prodding might be just enough of a nuisance to convince me to NOT send another donation, especially not one at this time.

They need to understand: just because I didn't send a check at the time of their funding drive doesn't mean I forgot.

Maybe I was planning on sending a check in a different month. Maybe my life situation changed enough that I couldn't afford the donation at the time.

Okay, okay, I'll get off my soap box now. Smile

actually...

I never donated to seti

just my cpu's

and for the record, the reason I stopped the team was basically 2 fold.

1) lack of enthusiasm. Seti made the program SOO different that it was actually fair, but never gave you a chance for sweet WU's or stockpiling

2) The results each week were very predictable. Everyone crunched along at the same pace.. no surprise jumps, no real excitement

I don't know about all that. I distantly remember setiQueue having a setting for sweet WU's, to the point where you could discard all but the quick ones. As for stockpiling, I always had 50-60 in reserve depending on how many cpus I had going. Granted that might have changed when they went to BOINC, I quit before the actual transition.

BOINC killed seti... I ran SetiQueue and had lots of crunchers for a time...then Boinc happened and it wasn't easy to setup remote installs anymore.

losing all my points and starting from scratch was one reason I decided to do Folding instead. Lack of available clients outside Windows didn't help either, at the time.

I think the stability of seti under BOINC was a joke. You could never get any WU's. I had big systems (64+ CPU's) just waiting for work and never getting any. It was simply a waste of time and energy..... Rolling Eyes

Wonder how many people made the switch?
I switched all of mine to folding except for one, just for the heck of it.

What really irritates me about organziations that ask for money are the ones that ask for it multiple times a year. There are a few that my wife donates to once a year but they feel the need to call you and ask for money every 3 months. When you call them on it, they give you some lame excuse that means nothing to me.
