Wow. I thought Microsoft is the company that practices these sly kinds of tricks. It will be very interesting to see if Apple gets slammed fir this, just as MS would be if they did something like it.
I must admit that, after this crack has matured a bit, I'm interested in trying it. Even if it forces me to buy the OS. See Apple: ONE more customer. You dorks!

I find it interesting that Apple hasn't released OS X for non-macs. I mean since the change to Intel hardware, it shouldn't be too difficult for them to do. If they are making money on each OS (a valid question), then selling more OS's should be a good thing, right?
If they managed to get more copies of OS X into the wild, then maybe more developers would be developing for mac's, which would maybe get more people to buy the OS etc. etc.
I'd like to try OS X, but I'm not willing to buy a new computer for it. I need it to install on my existing one. |

I am kind of wondering if Boot Camp or Paralles would still work. |

Quote:Hard core Mac users swear by it, insisting it's worth the extra money. Windows users often look at the price tag, and just swear at it.
So they don't mind paying a 300% markup on cheap hardware because the actual OS price is cheaper then Vista. |

mac os is basically a peice of software they they assembled from pre-made parts (BSD for the kernel, Cups for the printing software, I'm sure the list can go on for day.)
I'm guessing your average Linux distribution has more "custom" code put into it to make it work... the software is a hack job. a very good hack job maybe, but it is not a complete system it is systems they acquired and assembled. like putting an engine into a car, and maybe a steering wheel, and some printer drivers. not the Microsoft method of assembling the whole thing in mass in house, or buying the company that can or has already assembled it in house.
if apple threw an army of developers at this chuck of software that is held together with bailing wire and duct tape. They could get the whole thing up and running as smooth as it's big brother unix, across all of the lovely platforms, and hardware types that BSD will run on.
But then they will be expected to help support it on those wacky wintel machines... the hardware sales will fall out of their grubby little hands, into the hands of the likes of dell. heck Dell would probably start selling mac boxes along side it's windows, and Linux machines... and any instablity felt because of bad hardware, that windows doesn't experaince (because we've all had machines that run windows fine but crap them selfs with Linux or vice versa) would be blamed on their software.
no they are choosing to play it safe, only allow it on a few machines that they can test in house before hand to make sure that nothing crazy crops up. Heck they didn't even want windows to run on their hardware for a long time... but they kinda gave up and put out boot camp after some one hacked it, mostly so they could have a big warning saying that your putting your computer at risk by doing this before you install windows.
Mac still sees a direct comparison to windows as a threat (though really it should be the other way around I think). If you can have a head to head between two different operating systems on the same hardware, there is benchmarking, and numbers that say anything at all in direct comparison of the two doesn't really thrill apple who has stayed a float historically with a crazy fan base that has had a reputation of not actually comparing it to windows logically but doing it emotionally. |
