This article says basically nothing to me. I am not even sure why the guy wrote it.

Most commentary these days is just to fill the airwaves with
chatter, no matter how bloated, vapid or irrevelant it may be.

The above statement is a perfect example of that. Wink

Actually, I can grok his point. I don't necessarily agree with it, because he ignores the fact that Microsoft is actually spending Really Large Amounts Of Cash to Buy Off Everyone In Sight.

Technologically, he is right. Microsoft is bankrupt in the technology department. They suck at teh Windoz. Their technology is groupthinked to death by focus groups, and a company that was 4000 employees in 1993 is over 80000 full time employees (and many uncounted contractors) in 2007.

But, he doesn't even get into the fact that Microsoft has money, and lawyers. And they know how to use both. The recent attempted buyout of the ISO standards process was only another nasty chapter. Look what they did in Massachusetts. Ruined two people's careers bald facedly, unabashedly bought off state senators. Did the same thing in quite a few small countries too. China told them to fuck off, we'll see. So did Korea, by the way, and Microsoft actually threatened to cut off the entire country's Windows supply.

So the article isn't total bullshit, but he doesn't get why he's writing it. Microsoft will fuck themselves because people don't like bullies, and as economies go to shit over various reasons, and people have less money to spend, and people get sick of their technology fucking up, they'll switch to something else. If it's Linux, that's ok, they may buy Macs, which you can argue is just as bad as Windows. You might be right. But it's got a smaller market share.

He's right that technology advances quicker than bureaucracy. It's kind of a sucker bet, in fact. But it means nothing to say it too. There's more to the story.

Damn, I should be a writer... oh wait...

I'm just glad I haven't paid for MS software since the last time I got the hookup from an MS insider to get XP Pro for $35... and before that... I think it was the 98SE updates to 98. All the rest are student packs that were free (unless you count the technology fee in the tuition... but that went for computers and test equipment too... so no big loss there... I like my education... it gets me paid well)

and as soon as I get enough of my play fund saved up to build a new system, I'm gonna linux it up and totally ditch MS (cept for the game box that I'll set up the old - re: current - system for duty as... should get used about once a month since I'm such a gamer Rolling Eyes ).
