dstg_ll's link to a WMV-encoded video revealed a problem on this system: the WMV codec has gone wonky, tested with several .wmv files. Sound plays fine, but the video looks like someone ran it through 8088 Corruption first. The colours are all wrong and it's impossible to make out detail.

Installing my old faithful K-Lite codec pack hasn't sorted it, and my Google-fu has not yet revealed an answer; any ideas what I might have done to break it, and what I can do to fix it?

I never got to watch the end of it because my browser crashed, for the first time in Idunno-how-many years. The solution here is to stop clicking dstg's links. Twisted Evil

Well, quite. However, the problem also manifests itself with videos which haven't been recommended by dstg_ll.

Try removing the codecs and reinstall them.

How to unsinstall (like you need a link to do that...)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/142731/en-us

WMP Codecs:
https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=06FCAAB7-DCC9-466B-B0C4-04DB144BB601&displaylang=en

... or WMP 11:
https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1D224714-E238-4E45-8668-5166114010CA&displaylang=en

Then install XP Codec Pack:

Like a moron, I was searching for "wmv" not "windows media". D'oh!

That WMP9Codecs installer sorted out the problem. Many thanks.
