|
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6994631.stm
Quote:The long-running dispute between Microsoft and the European Union will finally be decided on Monday.
Three years ago, the European Union issued an anti-trust ruling against Microsoft for what it said was an illegal abuse of Microsoft's near-monopoly in the computer operating system market.
It ordered the company to change its business practices.
It also imposed the highest fine in European history - almost half-a-billion euros.
On Monday morning, Europe's second-highest court will deliver a ruling that could shape the rules of competition law in the bloc for decades to come. |

Who wants to bet Microsoft gets away with it? How about EU law gets decided to allow Microsoft to monopolize in the name of "a balanced competetive environment"? |

I have not been following this at all. What is it all about, condensed to the essence (as you guys see it)?

About 3 years ago, the EU Antitrust Commission ruled on a complaint brought against Microsoft, for bundling WMP with Windows and refusing to unbundle it. Microsoft was held in contempt and fined about 500 million Euros, which they immediately appealed (delay, delay). It's taken 3 years for the appeals to work their way along. So the appeals judgement is due, whether Microsoft with 98% market share on the desktop is a monopoly, or just a benevolent market leader with a good product, as they've managed to pay offconvince the US Department of Justice.
My bet is we'll see a watered down ruling from the Europeans. Microsoft's political machine is now legendary and they pay their lobbyists well. |

Holy... THAT old thing?
I remember thinking... "What? They can't bundle whatever program they like?". But it must be way larger and more important than that. I guess.
Well... tomorrow will be interesting then!
Thanks for the update, Edison.

And they have LOST their appeal...
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6998272.stm
Of course, they have two months to appeal this decision, so this could yet drag on for a while. |
