So my sister got the dreaded windows genuine advantage message the other day, she has gone along time with out updates, and since her machine was pretty well hardened from the get go, I was fine with that... But she wanted a genuine copy of windows... I thought the key I used when I installed her was genuine... but apparently MS disagrees...

Any how rather then break windows genuine advantage again... (yes done it before... will probably have to do it again before I die... if they didn't want it to be "cracked" they wouldn't give me admin rights to remove permissions to the files they need.) I set off to free up a hard drive, and install linux.

after carefully considering that this is my sister, I downloaded an Ubuntu install CD, and figured what the hell, if it all goes bad should be easy enough to install Debian, and maybe convince her that setting up her own desktop was worth while, and that the people who designed explorer for windows didn't want her to have any real choice in all the cool ways that a user interface could be laid out...

So after some screwed up install (twice it fucked up installing the boot loader, not something you should ever leave to chance people, first time the menu.1st wasn't even there, second time it was there but all backwards, (hd1,0) was actually (hd0,1)) after that got her up and running.

Then I set out to get to a more comfortable chair (her chair is wood, and hard.) so quick install of ssh, and set up a user name, and permissions for my self, and then back to my chair.

now I installed everything and used an ethernet to wifi box to get her online quick, with out having to worry about getting wireless drivers installed for her Wusb54gc (linksys usb wifi dongle) (more on this below.)

Yesterday She claims to be converted to linux now, because she was using "word" (open office) for ~2 hours, with no hangs crashes, or the like. appearently something she couldn't get on windows.... Rolling Eyes

Today she was talking about flash, and how that wasn't on there... quick ssh apt-get later it was... then while explaining to her what a "distro" is and that there is a way for her to install software on her own, in the gui some where (I hoped) she commented on how Tetris had one two many lines. I responded by installing frozen bubble for her... not installed by default appearently? I don't know who made the 2-3Gb install image for ubuntu, but no SSH and now Frozen Bubble... for shame on them.

Now for the wireless. WUSB54GC plugged in, when I do a network scan I only see one network, my own, and it has a signal strength of -180db ... (piss poor) now it works fine under windows, and gets a decent signal... but not under Ubuntu.

also interesting, is that there is a wmaster0 floating around, that I can't seem to find a purpose for...

it won't associate with my wireless, straight wep hex key pulled off my machine directly so I know that is right, and I've even switched the authentication to open (no longer shared) still can't get associated... I've looked in the ubuntu forums, but I was horribly deterred when I saw some one with a similar problem get the answer of "You should have negative signal, that is the problem, move closer." when infact they had a decent signal of -80db... I saw several such posts by idiots go unchecked, and have decided to distance my self from the retards.

Also when ever I do an "ifup wlan0" or an "ifdown wlan0" I get

Code: Select all
wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801
wmaster0: unknown hardware address type 801

something is hosed here, and I'm not entirely sure what any more, using the rt73 drivers that came with Ubuntu.
