OK, I was building a “Kludge” to host my site, after many mechanical setbacks. last night I fried the power supply, it's a quit, buy a system, get it over with.
This will be a base-line, low budget, machine, win 2k, single processor, no RAID, no shadowing, limited video, standalone, trivial data, sacrificial in nature.
It's providing, web hosting, ftp, & maybe some hacker retaliation services. I plan on putting my WEB site online with dyndns.org redirection with a cable modem through a linksys firewall.
I am looking for system recommendations (motherboard, processor, storage, memory, software, case, etc) along with local parts suppliers (Toledo)
Recommendations! |

From your description, all you need is a low end machine you might built for a newer user. Something like a Celeron/Duron 700. Abit or Asus motherboard. One 128 MB stick of PC133 Ram. Antec or Inwin mid-tower ATC case with 250 watt power supply. One 20 or 30 GB IBM hard drive. Linux is more secure and powerful than Windows 2000 for a server application but Windows 2000 is ok. Throw in a cheap AGP video card and a 3Com ethernet card and you are all set.
Only some suggestions.

ABIT SA6R has integrated sound and video you could save some cash on an agp card.
CeleronII's are cheap right now. anything up to 700 mhz is at least.
COMPUSA has 20 gig ata/66 5400rpm hard drives for 99 bucks.they also have 300 watt power supplies for 40 bucks. some of the stores have d-link ethernet cards in the bargin bin for 10 bucks.
memory is cheap everywhere right now.
I don't work for COMPUSA, HONEST![ ]

don't bother buying the Comp usa PS
I got pimped onto them when they first dropped down to $40 by a freind
in fact he turned about 6 diffrent people I know onto them
every single one failed within 3 months, and the warranty only lasts 30 days
you can get a 1yr extended warranty for another $20, but if you have to replace them every 2-3 months it's definitely NOT worth spending $60
look for someplace that carries a higher end brand of PS
I got my 400w for $80, and I've seen plenty of 300-350 Enermax's for 55-70
generally any brand that has a nice quality ball bearing fan on EACH end of the PS will be a good starting point.
Blame is for people who need a reason to be pissed off !

I looked at the posts, went to local vendors, you just can't build a machine anymore for what you can get a pre-manufactured system.
I cheated and got a ‘Junko' Emachine 600/32/10gb system for $309! Added another 45gb disk and a memory stick, still the investment is < $500.
Thanks Guys! |
