I'm working on that. A lot of it's about the same. I have been wanting to play with Rosegarden for a while, and here it is. It's not at all as full featured as Digital Performer, but then again, it didn't cost me thousands over the past 10 years to stay in the game too.
I have to finish my Mandriva article first - but I think I'll follow up with this afterwards. |

Which one are you writing a story on... 2007 or spring 2007? |

An infinite number of monkeys pounding away on keyboards will eventually produce a report showing that Windows is more secure and has a lower TCO, than linux.

Windows Vista RC2 expires this week. (It begins a period of only working for a limited time per day.) Today, I installed Ubuntu 7.04 on this old PC before I give it away. I can't say that I'm completely wowed by Ubuntu compared to my previous experiences with Mandriva, but it's up and working. Performance seems satisfactory, although desktop effects appear to not work with the NVidia proprietary graphics driver, and I had to manually update the X11 configuration to use the proper timings with my old monitor. Vista RC1 and RC2 made for a better free OS while the trial lasted, but this Linux box is functional.
Hardware specs:
AMD Athlon 2100+ (1.7 GHz)
Thermalright SLK-700A heatsink with AMD 70x15mm fan
EPoX 8VTAI Socket-A motherboard (Via KT880 chipset)
512MB PC2700 DDR333 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce3 Ti200 AGP
27GB Western Digital Caviar IDE hard-drive
NEC ND-1000A DVD burner
Bestec ATX 2.0 (24-pin) power supply from an ASUS case.
Ancient super-cheap ATX mini-tower case from when I built a K6-2 system a long time ago.
Gateway2000 VX900 (Hitachi CM751U) 19" CRT monitor
I'm taking my 3.5"/5.25" combo floppy drive out before giving it away. It won't fit in the ASUS TM210 case that my backup system resides in, but I'm going to save it as a collectible item. |

If you have the 9755 nvidia driver, then desktop effects do indeed work out of the box, and a simple:
sudo aptitude install beryl emerald-themes
will get you Beryl working too. |
