Found this to be a pretty decent article on the never ending battle between Linux(in this Case Ubuntu) and Windows Vista.

It's one of the few articles that as far I can tell doesn't turn things into an all out pissing contest. It shows both strengths and weakness that both OS have from a user's (I.E not Uber Geek) perspective.

Seems reasonably fair, although there is one point which is likely to remain a vicious circle for a while to come:

* Hardware support is better in Vista because Windows is the de facto standard; more vendors support it.
* People are more willing to use Vista because more hardware works with it, thus making it the de facto standard.

Unless people are willing to tinker with something which isn't quite as polished, it'll be a long time before Ubuntu (or any flavour of Linux, really) becomes sufficiently standard for hardware vendors to devote resources to it. Demand and supply, and all that.

As Toxin said, the main drawbacks the article points out is Ubuntu's inferior hardware support, which is unsurprising as the vast majority of hardware that Ubuntu supports has to be reverse engineered as the manufacturers will not provide the developers with the specifications.

Or Firmware which even once it is obtained then has to be put into a separate tree for Ubuntu and the end result is having to add more sources to your apt source list before you can get anything even close to working...

there is a change coming though from some hardware manufactures... slowly but surely more and more of them are opening up what they have to allow people to develop for it...

Maybe we need a new license GPL is to restricting for hardware developers to commit to... and their own are to restrictive for the open source community... something that would let hardware manufactures release their specs, interfaces, etc. to developers, with some kinda certainty (or legal repercussions) that everything they do with it would go to the GPL, and that they wouldn't reuse it for profit/gain etc. etc. etc.
