I have a Gateway 2000 Pentium II 450MHz (circa 10/1998)with 128 RAM that operates under WIN98.

How can I determine the make and specifications of my mother board...in detail?

Thanks.

It should say right on the motherboard....but if you don't want to bust open the case, you will probably be able to use software to find out. I recommend SiSoft Sandra. You can use the "mainboard information" on it and it will probably tell you what mobo you have installed. Here's the link for the software:

Another thing you can try to do is goto Crucial.com and look for memory for your system. Sometimes they have information about your motherboard. My friend found out what kinda mobo is in his gateway a few days ago thru crucial. (click banner at top of page if you are going to try it)

Hope that helps!

Thanks for replying...

I located and downloaded SiSoft Sandra and what it says under
< MAINBOARD AND PROCESSOR(S) > IS:

PROCESSOR(S):
- Intel Pentium II @ 448MHz.
PERFORMANCE RATING:
- PR538 (estimated).
L2 ON-BOARD CACHE:
- 513kB synchronis write-back
SYSTEM BUS(ES):
- ISA (16-bit), PCI(32/64-bit), USB, AGP(32-bit), SCSI.
SYSTEM BIOS:
- PhoenixBIOS 4.0, Release 6.0.
SYSTEM CHIPSET:
- Intel Corporation 82443BX/ZX 440BX/ZX CPU to PCI bridge (AGP
implemented).

Translation, please. When asked, what kind of MOBO I have,
what exactly do I say? Thanks.

Have you tried calling/e-mailing Gateway? How about turning off your computer and removing your motherboard to look for some I.d.? I can tell from the Sandra description that whatever your motherboard is, it is based on the 440BX chipset.

Try looking on the "quality test report" that should have come with your gateway computer. Mine was listed as a TABOR III which is made by intel specifically for gateway. Your machine is a year older than mine so your mobo may be different, but odds are it is still an intel board.

Try this gateway link http://www.gateway.com/support/techdocs/references/motherboard/index.shtml
It will help identify your mobo by bios revision

if you get really desperate you can look for groups of #'s stamped on the mobo, and try looking up those # combinations in the FCC-ID database

http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/

most mobo mfr's even label the FCC-ID # for you.

This place probably has the largest database for finding a motherboard manufacturer using the bios numbers you see at bootup..
