I need a quiet CPU cooler. I picked up a bargain basement socket 754 Mobile Sempron 2800 as a cheap 'n' cheerful upgrade for an old machine and the noise of stock fan is driving me nuts.

Any recommendations appreciated.

The good news here is that most of the big coolers made for Socket-939 also work for Socket-754, as well as many of the LGA-775 coolers. Anything that is made to handle a Prescott or Presler Pentium4/D is going to have an easy time with your Socket-754 processor.

Option 1:
CoolerMaster KHC-L91-U1 Hyper 48

Option 2:
Thermalright XP-90c
Nexus 92mm fan
Option 2b:
Panaflo-M 92mm fan
Wiring tail

If you have room, there are several coolers that use 120mm fans, but these 92mm models do a good job. If your motherboard has QFan speed control, give it a reasonable target temperature and let it slow your fan.

It hasn't got QFan. I couldn't get Cool'n'Quiet (or PowerNow, if you prefer) to work either, sadly.

If you are crunching seti or Folding on the PC then cool n quiet is pointless. CNQ only works when the workload is low or none. constantly processing will negate the effect

I'm curious, do these fancy-dan heatpipe designs work less well on vertically mounted motherboards?

In my experience the work just as good. Some of them are very heavy though. I've never had any problems with that either, but it shure is scary with some of them.

Not sure if you are still looking, but I just recently replaced my stock AMD CPU cooler. What I ended up getting was the Zalman CNPS7700-AlCu It is a lot quieter then the stock option even when running full speed, and keeps my processor running very cool.

Only problem was once I replaced the CPU cooler I started noticing all of the other annoyingly loud components, north bridge fan, PSU, etc.

If you have a lot of room in your case and don't worry about the weight they have some pure copper versions with a 120mm fan. Between that and the speed control they supply you could probably have the fan running at just over 1000rpm and not have to worry about heat, or any noise.
