|
My daughter is many miles away, and is having trouble with WinXP on her laptop. It probably is some sort of malware, but you know how hard that is to track down even when you have the computer in front of you!
She has some major papers due before Christmas (which is when she is coming home, and I can physically clean up her computer). So i figured I would send her a copy of a Linux distro that she could boot from, and hopefully get her through.
I've had trouble getting live-cd's to save configuration files (internet settings) and save documents to disk. So I figured I'd ask here: what's a good live-cd for a laptop, that will hopefully be easy to use in this way? OpenOffice and Firefox would be nice, too. She would feel comfortable with those, I think. |

saving them to the disk might mean over writing something else...
put in a USB key and save the settings there. |

Knoppix.
If she has a DVD-ROM drive in her laptop, then she can use the DVD edition of Knopipx - it has *TONS* of software.
It can save anything you want to the disk - but you might want to be careful writing to an NTFS partition (Windows XP formats disks using NTFS by default), because IIRC Linux still wasn't perfect at writing to NTFS, and could potentially destroy the partition. |

Just another thought, does she go to school near any of the dogs here, one that may be willing to cure her ailments for some beer and pretzels? |

Nah, I trust smokin. Maybe I shouldn't...
I downloaded and burned 2 copies of Knoppix, one for her, one for me. I had a really old version of it so i was due. It sure is nice! I love how it has OpenOffice on it. I'm going to drop one in the mail tomorrow, so she has it in case WinXP drives her crazy. I'm pretty sure she has some kind of malware happening: she said every now and then a song pops up and plays, and it isn't even one she has on her computer. And the only way she can stop it is to shut down.
Oh, and smokin, check your PMs... |

Knoppix runs in MS Virtual PC too, that way no reboot to play.
I run it that way so I can play with it.
The only time I actually boot to it is when I want to run Etherreal. |
