In case anyone (except Anglachel) is interested, the beta of Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft is out - I've been using it for a couple of days on my laptop - it's pretty nice indeed.

Edgy is due out on 27th October.

Wait...a couple days? Didn't you download it while I was talking to you yesterday? Razz

BTW, I downloaded it, but I haven't installed it yet...just got 6.06 working the way I want it, don't want to mess things up again quite so soon, lol.

What didn't you like about FC? I'm normally a Mandriva user, but used fc5 for the last week or so. Seemed alright

When they first released FC5 there was a fault that wouldn't allow it to get past boot. I never even made it to the desktop.

Tried it on 5 different machines. That was enough for me.

I recall having a similar problem installing it. Don't remember what I did to get past it, but after I got it to install and boot, it worked great. As a linux newbie, I tried many distros, and FC5 was the one I personally liked best.

Fairy Nuff.

I remember the media check failing on my copy, but despite that I was able to install it with no problems. Oh well.

of course there is an upgrade method, one of the finest, most mature package management systems ever made was stolen and slapped in ubuntu...

At a shell type apt-get -h

1.) It is easy to argue that open source software can never be 'stolen'

2.) Ubuntu has never tried to hide the fact that it is based on debian.

So they are using open source software, and giving credit to it's creator.

[EDIT]gah! I should be careful posting before coffee. Of course open source is easy to steal - just take the code and don't follow the license. However, this isn't the case with Ubuntu. They are well within the rights of the Debian license.[/EDIT]

Meh, forget Ubuntu and FC both...

My experience with FC went like this:
1. Installed it.
2. Rebooted into my new FC installation.
3. During boot, kernel panic.
4. Switched back to Gentoo.

I tried out Ubuntu when it was released, and it was pretty good. However, once Dapper was released as a stable version, my system got f*cked by this bug... So I switched back to Gentoo.

Perhaps I'll try out this new version of Ubuntu - maybe they've fixed that bug finally ?
