|
This problem could become potentially confusing as even i dont understand the most of it.
Recently aquired a few wireless laptops,
So i could use the wireless network within an office enviroment. However i am unable to access the wirless network,
It shows up on the list when i search for wireless networks but i cannot connect to it.
To give you an idea of what im running,
I have a Dell poweredge with a Draytek, vigor2600w router and a BT Broadband connection.
I have isa 2004 running on my server and was told by sum1 recently, that if my router is sitting behind the isa server, i would have to create a new VPN on the router and connect wirelessly via this vpn like connecting remotely in order to use the wireless network.
Does anyone have any info on how i go about getting this wireless access to work properly?
Any help would be appreciated. |

A few things, is the router running any sort of security like WEP, WPA or such? If so, then you would need to configure that before you can connect. Secondly, if Security isn't used, check to see if the router is hosting DHCP... if not, then you'll have to enter your own on your PC's. |

I do apologise for not mentioning this before, but the router is running WEP security, i have already configured this, DHCP isnt configured from router as there was no need for it.
DHCP server options all disabled. |

Try it without any security enabled first...make sure the hardware can see each other...
Then start enabling yer security. One step at a time. See where it breaks down... |

first off wep is almost like no security at all.
next off is acl turned on the router?
Are laptops fully patched with the network patches and have you enabled the wireless and using the news patches |

As Isamu has suggested ......... does your laptop's ip / subnet mask / default gateway / dns entries corraspond to the wireless ap and or the dhcp server?
Also try rebooting the ap by unplugging it from it's power source instead of letting its self reboot. |

Answer to all of the above is yes.
Everything is configured the way its supposed to be on both the router and the laptop.
The laptop detects the wireless network connection and the signal is full.
However when i try to connect, after a cpl of mins,
I just get a message saying there is little or no connectivity. |

i can see a system where you type in the secret phrase to the router it gives 4 codes
when i type the same phrase in the notebook, the 4 codes are different
i had to manually type one of the phrases and it worked fine
also, changed it up to the next level of phrase, it was easier
remember the ACL access control list
check logs of the dhcp to see if you are getting in
and the ACL to make sure it is allowed to get in |

Do you have a DHCP server anywhere on your network? Is there MAC filtering on the router? |

Sorry not been back in a while for this one, but im still having the problem. Before it was just a curiosity but now there are people needing to use the wireless network and can't.
Not using DHCP (been disabled for router)
No MAC Filtering on the router.
Will list some of the router settings below.
Wireless LAN enabled
SSID has been set with name specified by myself.
On channel 6, 2437MHZ
WEP key has been setup
No MAC Filtering, No access control, access allowed from all devices and mac addresses.
If you want anymore info, let me know. |

uhm, is the key the thing you type in
or the phrase you use to generate the secret keys ....
my friends works on a phrase, and mac ACL
and hiding the name ....
btw, a PSP will find a secret hidden wireless access point and let you type in the name
where a notebook won't see ahidden WAP unless you know the secret name ....
just in case |

How are your clients getting an IP address if the DHCP server is disabled via the router? Do you have a DHCP server elsewhere on your LAN?
Step 1 - Plug directly into the router to eliminate it being a wireless connectivity issue. If you still have an issue at this point, then I'd start looking in the direction of the DHCP server. Try setting the router up to issue 5 - 10 addresses in your subnet to see if this helps.
Step 2 - If you get connected via step 1, check out the following section:
Right click wireless icon, select View Available Wireless Connections. Click on "Change Advanced Settings". Click on the wireless network tab, and ensure that your SSID is NOT in the Preferred Networks list.
If step 2 gets you connected, then the issue was the SSID of your router was already stored with another WEP/WPA key...when it tried to connect to your new router, it tried to use the stored key...in most routers it does not prompt you for a new key if the stored key is incorrect.
Step 3 - When your up and running, turn off the POS called WEP, and get yourself some WPA or WPA2! |

its just a key i specified.
Stays the same its not a secret key or anything, i tried to leave the security as minimal as possible just for testing until i set it all up properly when i would increase the security.
at the moment its just a normal 6 digit WEP key. |
