Sun Aug 20, 2006 4:55 pm Post subject: Using Samba to share folders with Win boxes on my LAN |
|
Okay guys, I attempted the great experiment... I decided a little while ago to make an attempt at replacing my Windows 2000 Server box (used primarily for file shares to the rest of the network, and a little web serving), with a Linux box.
Ultimately, I decided to go with the Ubuntu flavor of Linux (and using the Server version of it, with the Gnome GUI installed and working).
I even got my files copied from the old NTFS partitions to the new EXT3 ones that I want to share with the rest of my (Windows) network.
And that's where I seem to be stuck.
My network is based around simply a named workgroup (named to my last name, rather than the default WORKGROUP or MSHOME).
I'd like to figure out how to share different folders to different logins (that's how I have it set up with Win 2k server now). But I cannot even figure out how to get it to share to any machine, with any login.
Long story short, after setting it up (using Samba) the way I thought I was supposed to, I go to my Windows machine and try to browse to the share. For example, let's say that my server is named fred, and the share I set up is archives. I go to Windows, and try to browse to \\fred\archives
It then gives me a Windows login box, but nothing I type in there (including username or fred\username or fred/username as the id) will let me even see the share.
I used the Gnome GUI to share that folder (supposedly), and I confirmed that it does show up in the smb.conf at /etc/Samba.
But I'm stuck. Can anyone either help, or at least point me in the direction of some good resources to help me figure it out on my own?
Thanks all! |

first off try just the IP address not the computer name.
Secondly, typing testparm at a command line will dump your smb.conf and check for any errors.
And if you are using a recent version of ubuntu and windows XP that should be give you a fair indication as to what is wrong.
Oh and make sure you have a user on the linux box with access to both the files your trying to share (chmod 777 if you want to be read write for ever one, I recomend it for trouble shooting permissions issues, not much more.) and as smb users. (smbpasswd --help has more on that) |
