Only if you work out how to load video drivers before the boot logo.

Nope. No-one on these forums knows how yet. I was hoping you might have the magic answer.

Sorry about that, dude. In the meantime we're all stuck with 16 colours.

If you want a good program to change your picture to 16 colours without making it look crap you should try IrfanView.

I was just thinking... Anyone remember the old days of Win3.1x when after typing WIN.COM at the prompt, you were presented with the Win3.1x logo? Was that 16 colors or was it 256?

You would think by now, that mighty M$ could have their fancy operating systems take advantage of serious VIDEO HARDWARE to improve the flashy boot logo, whilst we wait and wait for their software to boot?

Perhaps in the next generation of Windows, we'll maybe get the option of having a 3D Accelerated BOOT LOGO!!!! Wouldn't that be cool?yellow cool

I believe that Win2K only starts loading device drivers after the splash screen has appeared - meaning that it would be very difficult (perhaps impossible) to load the display drivers first.

A very experienced programmer (unlike me for example) might be able to find a way to delay the loading of the splash screen until the display drivers are loaded - you would need a delay of around five seconds in my estimate depending upon the Win2K startup environment. The display drivers should be loaded quite early on in any case - Win2K will proceed to the 'Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to Begin' screen whilst still loading drivers, so ideally you would want the display drivers to be already loaded.

let me start off by saying: i'm not a programmer . . or even a hacker/cracker/phreak

but i invested some time in trying to overcome the limitation to no avail

the best thing i could come up with (if there were some programmers with the windows source tree at their disposal)

my thoughts on the subject:

there are only 2 ways around the current 16 color limitation

a) compile a Vesa complaint color driver in such a way that you can replace bootvid.dll

b) after you have your vid drivers installed, rebuild the ntoskrnl in such a way that it will pass the windoze self checks, but will load your actual vid driver instead of the bootvid.dll

both of which are WAY outside my capabilities [Sad]

temporary replacement signature . . . please stand by
