|
So I've already got longpath.org registered through "Network Solutions LLC" - at a ridiculus price ($36 / year)... I want to transfer it to Godaddy, and also register another one, but have them both on the same server via apache + virtual domains... how exactly is this all going to work?
domain name registrations sites are confusing as all hell, because they all use conflicting terminology, so at this point they've succeeded in confusing the hell out of me. o_O |

I have no clue on how Doman name transfers work, but you shouldn't have a problem running two domains with Apache. Your biggest issue right now is getting your domain transferred and a registering your second domain and then setting up DNS.
You are a smart kid Doomy. I know you can figure this out. |

You should just have to point your domains to the namservers you have setup in Apache. This is easy to do with godaddy. I can give you a ling to some demo videos that may help you with the registering companies.

This may help you with your confusion or at least I hope it helps you out. |

start the transfer at go daddy.
They have some random pdf available during the process that goes into great detail the steps involved.
Plan on it taking a week to get done.
You will probably have to call network solutions 1/2 way thru the ordeal to release it, and so they can try to sell you additional years at go daddys price.
NetSols nameserver management is pretty easy too.
As far as actually setting up your DNS schema, I HIGHLY suggest you take a look at O'Reilly's book on BIND. Misconfigured or poorly configured DNS zones, which often times is an easy fix, can make hosting a nightmare.
The super un-involved version
update your "Domain host summary" with go daddy if you are running your own name server. You really only need one group of host servers regardless of how many domains your name servers host. For example, all of my clients domains host servers are using ns1.olivejar.net ns2.olivejar.net and possibly ns3.olivejar.net. If you do an nslookup of littlewhitecat.com, you will see this.
Once your domains are assigned to your host servers, go ahead and build each domains zone in BIND.
Sit on your hands for 18 hours.
Of course, if you let godaddy or someone else do the dns hosting for you, easier and less involved.

If you roll your own, you will thank me 100 times over for this link: http://www.dnsreport.com/ |

Okay so since I don't plan on hosting my own DNS server, once I transfer my existing domain over to GoDaddy (I'm thinking I should do this before registering a new one - as it sounds like it's going to be a huge pain int he butt), it'll be recognized on their DNS servers, correct?
So when I register a new one, I can just use their DNS servers as well, and I just need to tell it to go to the same IP address as Longpath.org, so Apache can take over with it's virtual domains.
As for configuring Apache, I've already got that taken care of thanks to the extensive documentation that's availible for it on the web. |

1/2 of 1, 6 dozen of another. They are completely different operations. I often have a few domains in transfer to or from go daddy while registering others.
As far as using go daddy's DNS, don't know. I run my own and have never used theirs. It very well could be a paid service.
But whatever DNS you do use, yes. Basically all you need to do is point whatever records to whatever IP's. |

apparently you can use something called Total DNS Control to manage your records. |

Like ^^ he said ^^ start at the Registrar you want to go TO, and they will confirm with the Registrar you are leaving, who will in turn confirm with you that you are leaving. There is like 5 minutes of work to do in that week.
There is also a nominal fee for Reg Xfers. I think GoDaddy was $7. |
