Do you have to really "install" a crossover cable. What settings do you have to change to get it to work properly.

It depends what you want to do with it.

If you're talking about a cross-over Ethernet (CAT3/CAT5) cable then you don't need to do anything extra. The two PCs should already have network cards installed and working. If you're running Win98/2K or better then you don't even need to worry about protocols, since TCP/IP is installed by default, and if the operating system can't find a DHCP server then it automatically assigns an address in the 169.254.0.0. subnet.

If you use a cross-over serial cable then you'll need to use Dial-Up Networking (Win9x) or Network And Dial-Up Connections (Win2K) to set up a Direct Connection between the PCs.
