sometimes drives will conflict with each other in strange ways... you would think that you could mix and match any which way... but some hard drives won't play well with other hard drives and cd/dvd drives are the same... and sometimes they don't cross over well... but if you figure out which pair will work well together... you're all set.

Well, this resurfaced last night. I'm starting to wonder if it might not be a heat problem, anybody ever seen anything like this? I had burned like 10 DVDs with no problems over the last couple weeks. Last night I had 4 I needed to burn. First 3 went off with no problems, the last one got to 90% and failed. Tried it again, and again 90% and failed. Let it sit over night, and tried again this morning and it burned with no problems.

And I've noticed that the failed discs have some pretty weird burn patterns on the bottom. Like the ones last night almost looked like a bullseye with rings of burned areas and unburned areas. Quite strange, I may take a pic and post it up when I get home.

A thermal problem is not beyond the realm of possibilities... I have a Yamaha CRW-F1 CD burner which stops functioning properly (reading/writing) after my system has warmed up for awhile.

Yeah, I'm still looking for a fan to put on it to test this out. Although the drive never has a problem reading, only burning. I can watch DVDs all days long, and I can rip DVDs all day long and it will never hiccup once. The ripped ISOs always play back perfectly. It's only the burn phase having problems.

I also discovered last night that some of the DVDs that I burned and thought were sucessful only play about halfway through and then I get a disc read error. Flipped the discs over and they have a bit of that bullseye type pattern I was describing earlier on the bottom. I think I'm just gonna buy a new one and be done with it. They're cheap enough now.

I totally agree; ATAPI DVD d/l recorders can be found for about 40 or 50 bucks; how much is your time worth to you? Hopefully much more than the cost of a new burner. I am very pleased with the pioneer model I purchase ~ 6 months ago; I haven't had 1 bad burn yet, works with DVD Decryptor perfectly, even while burning data from across my network.

Well, I ended up just getting pissed and ordering a new drive. The HP has now been replaced with this Lite-On. I'll probably never use the Lightscribe stuff, but figured I'd get one anyways just in case the media got cheaper. Burned 7 discs in a row yesterday on the same media I've been using all along with no probs... and quite a bit faster as well.

Lightscribe disc are around a $1 or less per disc, CD or DVD, least at the Wal-mart they are. They have a 10pack of CD-R and a 10 pack of DVD+R both for around $8-$10 each. I love it, I've had my new laptop a week and have burnt 4 CD's already and have a 10 pack of DVD's to convert some home videos to DVD.

Every geek/gadget lover should have one. As long as you remember the picture is mono and that contrast is what matters, you get a preview before you burn, the pictures turn out great.
