A friend of mine has asked me for some assistance. He wants to put all of his records to CD through his computer. I'm really quite unfamiliar with Macs, but thought maybe someone on here might have an idea as to what he would need to do so... can you have a receiver inputing what a record is playing going right into a mac or do you need some special device for it? I don't think money is an issue with him.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Your friend needs a phono preamp, which is a doodad that equalises and amplifies the record cartridge to line level. For software, Audacity should do.

A RCA to mini phone plug adaptor is probably needed too. That's about all there is to it. Should cost about $25 for the RIAA amp and $3 for the adaptor. Audacity is FOSS.

Wow thanks! That is very helpful! One last question - what is FOSS?

BTW your friend should know that the sound quality from record to cd is going to be very poor. worse than you'd get from cassette to cd
