quick Q:
I remember that you can use older drives with newer scsi controllers (use a scsi 2 drive with an LVD contorller)
anyone out there know if I can use a scsi III hard drive with a scsi 2 controller without problems ? (I've only used OEM LVD setups which were all scsi 3)
both the drive and the controller use a 68 pin cable so there's no interface/adapter issues
obviously, if i can use the scsi 3 drive with the scsi 2 controller it'll be limited to the 20mb/s transfer rate of the controller.

SCSI 3 = SCSI 160?
I think it will.
Got this from IBM's site:
Capable of supporting up to 15 devices, connected by up to 12 meters total cable length, the IBM PCI Wide Ultra2 SCSI Adapter can also handle a combination of 8-bit and 16-bit drives. The adapter also supports the attachment of bootable storage devices to the faster SCSI bus and is compatible with SCSI, SCSI-2, or SCSI-3 protocols.

Personal expirence with SCSI. I know there is LVD but you have to be careful whether or not it is LVD or just D. If you plug in a differential SCSI into a LVD or a non-differential you will most likely start a fire. (It's happened to me more time than I would like to admit too) Also you will most likely fry your cable and your drive and your controler card (possibly your MB if the controller is on the board itself) Just a little FYI.
Thanks

I've found the most informative site, regarding scsi, are the Storagereview forums. I was considering a SCSI subsystem, so I checked them out and learnt a bit along the way. Dual AMD rig, is on the current agenda so scsi must wait. [ ]
Edit: Dammit, straight from noobville, population me. :duh:
