I'm trying to make a bootable Windows CD with some files that [cough]I found on an un-named FTP site[/cough].
When I tick the 'bootable CD' option it asks for a *.bin file. I don't have one and haven't got a clue about where to find/make one.
I understand that the boot-sector of the CD imitates a boot-floppy but don't know which files should live in there or how to roll them up into a .bin file.
I'm using CDRWin cos its free and someone (Brain I think) suggested it!
Any help on either bootable CDs in general or exactly which Winblows files wanna be in the bootable area would be much appreciated.

*.BIN file is an image file of a floppy. I think Mandrake has a program (under windows) which lets you get the image file of a floppy. Most other operating systems have dd and in that case it would be

dd if=/wherever/you/floppy/is of=Name.BIN

I'm gettting bored about bootable cdroms questions

I think if you do a search on the forums for "boot CD or bootable CD" you will find a thread that talks about this issue. The way I make a bootable CD is by following my Easy CD creater software that came with my HP CD-RW. csign is right though, when making a bootable CD there is an image of a boot floppy disk on the CD, (strange, ain't it?).

When one of my bootable CD's is run, you would swear it was the floppy drive, complete with the "A:"

Do the search and see what you come up with. But I know there are some threads hanging out here somewhere on this issue..

right

I meant I'd fire up Cdr-win and see if there was a way to make the .bin file from within cdr-win

I've made them from within crappy-cd creator plenty of times

all right

after looking this morning, there isn't any way to create the "boot floppy" image from within CDR-WIN

the choices:

get a hold of sleazy-cd cremator 4.x or 5.x and do the dirty work

OR

use the program that Demon or SOS was pimpin the other day: . . . winimage

personally I'd go with choice #2

I used to use ez-cd 4 but it did a highly efficient terminator impression on my PC when I upgraded to Win2k, hence use of CDRWin.
I'll have a go with WinImage... hey if Demon and SOS were pimpin' for it, it can't be all bad!!
