|
Can an ATI video card (PCI-e) and an NVIDIA card (PCI) live in the same machine without fighting?
Farmboy has an FX5200 that he would like to add to his PC to run a 3rd monitor. However, when he boots into XP everything comes to a grinding standstill. He cant even get to the display properties.
Specs are....
DFI LanParty Ultra + AMD64 3800
2GB RAM
Radeon X850 (PCI-e)
FX5200 (PCI)
If they wont work together, can someone reccomend an ATI (PCI) card that will run a LCD at 1600*1200 true colour (DVI-D). Note, it's not for games or anything that will require heavy 3D rendering, just 2D work like photoshop and CAD work. |

yeah we've done this at work. They will get along, but the ATI control panel doesn't like the nVidea control panel. They will show up as different adaptors. We're doing this on XP Pro.
The ATI card I am using at work (right this minute) is a Radeon 7000 series. Not sure which 7000 it is in the series, but it's a dual monitor card. The nVideas we used were 450s. I can't say I liked it a lot running with different adaptors. |

I'm currently using a Sapphire Radeon 9200 PCI card as part of the multi-monitor setup on my desk at work. It's got both DVI and D-SUB outputs and should be able to cope with 1600x1200 without any problems. Admittedly, I only run it at 1280x1024 because that's the LCD's native resolution. It's now been superseded by the 9250, and the replacement is still dirt-cheap. |

I'd argue against the $35½ Radeon 7000. True, you don't need the 3D capabilities that it lacks, but you would also be giving up some video acceleration features, too.
For $59, Radeon 9250 is a DX8.1-class part (similar to Radeon 8500). |
