|
So this has been happening since I got this hard drive, but I didn't think much of it... And now I'm going to post it.
So I've got three hard drives:
80GB Maxtor Windows Drive
80GB Maxtor Storage Drive
80GB Seagate Linux Drive
I only boot off the Linux and Windows drives... The Linux one boots great. The Windows one, however, has some sort of wierd problem... I turn the box on, it POSTs, and the screen goes blank as if it's about to show th e Windows Boot Screen, but it just hangs there for a minute or two... The it boots as per normal, with no other problems. Linux, on the other hard drive, boots fine, with no problems at all.
I have tried reseating the cables, using a different boot logo (I'm not running the stock one, tried that too...), and I'm out of idea. Anyone know what might be happening? |

Defragging and running BootVis would be a good place to start. |

It doesn't sound like there are any hardware problems, maybe it's one of those PEBKACs
But you might wanna check these: bootvis and User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
[Edit]Oops, it took too long to search for bootvis. |

I'll try defragging and using BootVis here in a little while...
And no, I haven't done any diagnostics yet. Like I said, it works just great once it's booted up. |

Maybe its not the drive at all but the OS. You say Linux boots up fine, Windows takes forever. Unless it was faster at one point and has slowed down, you're liable to be stuck with this problem |

Unless I can get the place I bought the drive (and the rest of the components) from to replace it under warranty... It's a longshot, but maybe they'll do it... |

Apparently M$ is no longer offering bootvis...
I only had ~2.5GB free space on this drive, so I copied a crapload of my MP3s and stuff over to my other 80GB Maxtor, the storage drive, so I would have enough free space to defrag... I also downloaded the User Profile Hive Cleaner Thingy, and I'm going to run that when this file copy gets done...
<EDIT>
Defragging now...
</EDIT> |

THERE's your problem! DUH!
You need to keep at least 20% of a WinBlows drive free.
I try to never have less than 75% free on my WinHDD.
If you have a dedicated Windows drive, take Everything else off! |
