<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote>quote:
You don't have to surf, just run MandrakeUpdate and it will ask for an ftp site where it should get the updates from. After that every time you will start MandrakeUpdate it will look at that ftp site and if it finds update it will let you know and ask you if you want to download them. If you say yes than it will get them, check there checksum if they are really from Mandrakesoft and install them.
The only problem is kernel, That is advised to be done by hand because a borged kernel is something really nasty.
In that case download the rpm, do rpm --checksig kernel-2.4.***rpm and than install it with rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.***rpm.(MandrakeUpdate does an rpm -Uvh, that will throw the old kernel away)
<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote>
So how do you get Mandrake Update to ask for that ftp site? Mine doesn't even accept them when I try to put them in manually. I've never been able to get Mandrake Update to access any location other than the cd's. |

In the Software Manager ... next to the Install/Remove button there's the Define sources button ... click new ...

So how do you get Mandrake Update to ask for that ftp site? Mine doesn't even accept them when I try to put them in manually. I've never been able to get Mandrake Update to access any location other than the cd's.
[/quote]In the Software Manager ... next to the Install/Remove button there's the Define sources button ... click new ...
I've done that many times. After entering a new source there is a little checkmark in the little box. Then I click ok. And then it's gone into never-never land. When I open the define sources box again, it's gone; as if I'd never been there.
Do you know where it's supposed to save those files? I could bypass the gui and manually enter the addresses if I knew where.

some troubleshooting
1. did you install pident rpm (yes you did)
2. does it run(if you do ps -aux look at ident), ifnot do /etc/init.d/ident start
3. does your firewall stop port 113.(probably yes), do /etc/init/bastille-firewal stop
to stop the firewall, see if you can get it than. |
