The way I look at it. a 1-4 of Mussina, Pavano, Wright, and Brown would have been pretty good.
Now insert Johnson at the front the rotation, and everyone moves down. I think that suits Mussina and Pavano the most. Mussina IMO is a superstar no. 2 starter. He is coming off an off year and is a year older. Pavano is good, but not as good as his 2004 numbers (18-8, 3.00 ERA). A switch to the AL will be tough, but even if he wins 13-16 games with a sub 4.00 ERA he will be one of the best No. 3s around. Wright is another guy coming off of a year he won't repeat, but as a No. 4? Even pitcing like he prolly will, he could be a No. 2 on a lot of teams, and a No. 3 on almost all. Round it out with Kevin Brown, who like Mussina is a year older but coming off a year unlike himself. It had been a long time since he pitched in the AL. Now that he has a year back expect him to pitch better. A bit pricey for a 5th starter, but a lock to give you 10 wins if he is heathy, which is what you want from a Number 5.
I have heard people throw around the whole "Best Rotation Ever" speech already. If you factor in whole careers, Brown would be 2 or 3 and everyoen else would move down. Then I would give you best rotation ever. It's hard to think that you could ask for more career wise.
But as for this coming season. It's possible but we have to wait and see. Johnson is like 5 years removed from the AL (maybe more). He. Mussina, and Brown are all a year older (Brown will be 40 on openeing day) and the others aren't far behind. Pavano is the only onle under 30. And lets be serious, Pavano and Wright probably won't pitch up to the same stats as last year especially switching leagues. Tack on the pressure of Bew York, and well.....they have a lot to live up to. |
