hi all, i am so sleepy so sorry for not organizing this thread well.

i have an old pc

with 128 RAM, 24GB hardisk and intel celeron 300 Mhz processor. the mother board is PC100.

i can install windows on it with no problems. but i cant install freebsd on it.

here are details:-

i put freebsd's bootable CD
i start the computer
i press ENTER
i select standard (standart installation)
i select the hardisk, format it, partition it (default partition), boot manager..etc
i press ENTER, then it says "if you proceed you will lose all your data.. are you sure?"
i say "yes i am sure"
another screen appears saying "writing drive partetion information to drive ad1"
this screen will never ever change or go to another screen
if i wait 100 years the screen it will be there saying the same thing.

what should i do?

try a different operating system. There is nothing approaching enough information in your initial post. Try a Linux install instead, if it works, use that. FreeBSD has assumptions on certain kinds of drive controllers, etc. It sounds like the drive isn't formatting properly. But I can't really tell and I am not in the mood to argue. Please just give more details if you want some help.

i downloaded the last version of freebsd 3.5 and i'll try it now.

i am going it to burn it into a CD then install it there... any idea of installing freebsd 3.5 from the network like ftp without the need of waste CDs?

3.5? That was announced in June of 2000. 5.3 is the current stable release and it was announced 6 Nov 2004.

The reason this matters is that the newer versions have much better support for networks and peripherals. Among many other things.

Have you tried a new version or are you stuck with the 4 year old 3.5 release? I run 4.7 at home, and that's even due for an upgrade.

and i still have the same problem

more details about freebsd installation problem:-
when the CD is booting it hangs for few minutes and then continues running.

it says
unkown: (pnp3030) cant assign resources (port)
unkown: (pnp5051) cant assign resources (port)
unkown: (pnp5051) cant assign resources (port)
unkown: (pnp0700) cant assign resources (port)

after waiting.. it continues.. and normal steps come:-

What does the boot up screen say?

What BIOS version are you running?

Is this an intergrated mobo?

Do you have any piccies you can show us? Wink Smile

Try one of the Live CD Linux distros...it should give you more info about yer hardware... Wink Smile

it is an old motherboard.. it is PC100 i am not sure about the manufacture..
it has old keyboard slots (these big ones) i usally use a convertor for the keyboard becuase no more keyboards are available for these old mobos.

the mobo does not have USB.. because it is too old

it uses Intel Celeron 300 MHz

the bios version is 2.23

Gentoo takes about a day to install, if you know what you're doing. Two or three days if you are a Gentoo n00b - not sure if that's the best test for your drive.

You might try downloading Knoppix (or another LiveCD distro) and using fdisk to format your drive... I'm pretty sure that fdisk would give better debug info than the FreeBSD installer. Very Happy

is plug and play OS disabled in the BIOS ? (it should be disabled)

also when at the boot loader enter '6' to get a boot> prompt and enter boot -v perhaps there's more information to tell there..

i'll check for plug and play OS.

another thing i heard about is Ultra DMA which must also be disabled to install FreeBSD (as i heard).. is that true?

my mother board is old and there is no UDMA in bios settings, but what i noticed is that when the installation CD detects HDDs it mentions "UDMA".. could it be the problem?

i installed gentoo and every thing was nice with no problems.. i dont knwo why it is not working with freebsd..

i'll try what you said about plug and play OS
and wait to hear from you about UDMA.

PC100 is one of the names pcchips worked under.
