A recent post got me thinking....

I know I've gone out and searched for standalone software. It enables me to put text editors, graphix editors, etc.. onto a thumb drive. That way, I just plug in, and my tools are good to go. This has really made it easy for me to do some web programming. I have a decent editor to code in, and a decent graphics program to work on the images I need.

The two programs I've found so far are:

editpad pro - Requires install, but afterwords, you can select it to be standalone, then copy to a thumbdrive, any other computer w/o issues

Irfanview - standalone right out of the box.

---

So anyone have any others that they could suggest. Kind of a travelling toolkit. A list of programs (preferably share/freeware) that could be easily transported without effort?!?!?

I suppose FireFox would be the first and obvious suggestion, for testing your web editing. It can be set up so that if you open it with a shortcut on the thumbdrive it will use a local profile to the thumbdrive and you can run it right off of there.

CWShredder is a standalone executable.
DrTCP works out of the Box.
UnFREEz is a high-speed Windows application that will take any number of images, saved as separate GIF files, and create a single animated GIF from those images.

Every ToolBox Needs:
  • ExeInfo utility shows general information about executable files (*.exe), dynamic-link libraries (*.dll), ocx files, and drivers files. It can recognize all major types of executables, including MS-DOS files, New Executable files (16-bit) and Portable Executable files (32-bit).
    ---
  • Angry IP Scanner is a very fast IP scanner for Windows. It can scan IPs in any range. Its binary file size is very small compared to other IP scanners. Angry IP scanner simply pings each IP address to check if it's alive, then optionally it is resolving hostname, scans ports, etc. It also has additional features, like NetBIOS information (computer name, workgroup name, currently logged in user and MAC address), results saving to CSV, TXT, HTML, XML or IP-Port list file, can be used as a command-line utility in a batch file, etc. With help of plugins, Angry IP Scanner can gather any information about scanned IPs. Anybody who can write code is able to write plugins and extend functionality of Angry IP Scanner.
    ---
  • Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder v1.41 is a freeware utility that retrieves your Product Key (cd key) used to install windows from your registry. It has the options to copy the key to clipboard, save it to a text file, or print it for safekeeping. It works on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Office 97, and Office XP. This version is a quick update to make it work with Windows Server 2003.
    ---
  • Protected Storage PassView v1.62 Protected Storage PassView is a small utility that reveals the passwords stored on your computer by Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and MSN Explorer. The passwords are revealed by reading the information from the Protected Storage.
    ---
  • Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.

How about:
  • PuTTY - a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms, along with an xterm terminal emulator.
  • ijini - One of the tiniest web browsers around, and the reason this standalone list started.
  • Mozilla Thunderbird - Yes, it's portable, too!

(Caution: be sure NOT to let TB grab your email on the during the SETUP phase if you don't want all your messageds d/l from the server! You can set the options to leave messages on the server once the program is running)

Also, most of the apps found at Tiny Apps, one of which is:

Simple File Shredder
Quote:

Simple File Shredder is a utility that securely deletes
your files so they can't be restored using recovery software.

SFS ensures your privacy by:

1. Scrambling the file name
2. Encrypting the file with a random key
3. Over-writing the file up to 20 times with random bytes
4. Change the file date/time to a random date/time value
5. Verify the file has been completely shredded before deleting it

Simple File Shredder is free with no adware/spyware. Simply download, extract, and run. No installation required.

Edit: link fixed. Thanks.

A very standards compliant standalone web browser:

Amaya

And of course I use PuTTY, Firefox, Thunderbird, constantly.

Oh yes, a very good text editor (with syntax higlighting for many programming languages):

Notepad2

I just thought of a few more:

On that link I gave to Notepad2, there is a link to "Textview", which allows you to view lots of text files easily.

Also, I believe JEdit will work on a separate USB drive once you install it, like IrfanView.

EDIT: Also, I can mirror as many of these as you guys want -- just ask. I could also make a page listing them and their descriptions.
