There's a site dedicated to "Portable" FREE software:
http://www.portablefreeware.com/all.php
Quote:This site is dedicated to the collection and cataloguing of freeware that can be extracted to any directory and run independently without prior installation. They can be carried around on a memory stick / USB flash drive, or copied / migrated from PC to PC via simple network copying. Hence the term portable freeware.
- even covers software that requires an Install first, but explains what files to copy to your portable drive, then you can Uninstall the software.
and if you don't want to go through that, just download their Portable Freeware Collection (Vol 1 & 2) which already has the files you'd need. |

Has anyone actually checked to see if this software is really stand alone? I want to make sure that it not only runs off a thumbdrive, but it would leave no trace of having ever been run. Even if Windows keeps a record somewhere of the program having been run, I most want to make sure that the web browsers and email clients don't leave any saved passwords on the computer. |

Welcome to The Pound madcow3417
The ones I use are all fully self-sustaining executables.
Some of them write additional files to the thumbdrive. |

WELCOME!
As far as browsers, and so forth leaving passwords, or history behind... You can set up the app not to save those things, or configure them to save it all on the thumb drive, instead of on the HDD... |

for that matter.... And completely off topic...
Why is it a thumb drive? If it is only 64MB is it a "finger drive"? How about a simple (like MAYBE 1MB) "pinky" drive that carrys all of your passwords, and the info for a roaming profile. To log into the OS... Plug it in. It reads the info, runs any scripts, and applies any security settings included on the drive, asks for a PIN or p/w to verify that the owner of the drive is the one actually using it... and viola!
Oh, wait.... that's awfully close to smart cards, and other hardware lock technologies... |

Check out Eraser. http://www.heidi.ie/products.php
Quote: Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows and DOS), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. |

Xchat - Multiplatform IRC Client
install as normal, placing install directory on thumb drive.
in install directory create new directory titled 'config' or some such
create shortcut to program, and add -d '.\config' to the end of the shortcut
will now run as standalone, loading all info from the config directory |

Quote:Forgot about this one:
Restoration
Graphical user interface for recovering deleted, and emptied from trash items.
Searches for all available files that can be restored so you can look for what you want and restore it, or a bunch of files. I like it becasue I can leave it on someone elses machine and walk them through it over the phone. Nice and simple.

This is also a good STANDALONE software utility for those thumb drives
