Having seen the LWD frontpage link to Sun's news release on Free Solaris 10, and then reading Sun's article on Lxrun ("... an emulator for executing Intel and ELF linux binaries on .... Intel x86...") at:

can anyone comment on how well one can run linux programs and X-window managers (I'm partial to KDE) under Solaris 10? Also, is there a performance penalty for Lxrun compared to running linux apps natively?

I've never tried any Solaris, is there any compelling reason to run it vs a solid linux distro?

Thanks.

Solaris is definitely a very nice operating system. It is not linux, though and it's almost easier to just build for Solaris than it is to run Linux packages under Lxrun. I don't think the performance penalty is much more than negligible though. I've worked with Solaris for many years and although you need to be on your toes with patches, it's actually pretty solid for web serving. Although I'd prolly use a BSD for an exposed Web server myself.

It's worth a look. Maybe not your cuppa. But worth a look. And as Fast1 says, a used machine is legal now.
