Post Posted: Sat Oct 23, 2004 10:10 am   Post subject: Well, I'm getting a DVD burner! Er... Which one? Reply with quote Back to top

So for chiristmas, I'm going to ask for (and most likely) get a DVD burner + a rounded IDE cable, and all that comes to ~$100 shipped USD.

So, this is my question: what kind of DVD burner should I get? I want on that can do +/- RW, and it has to be less than ~$70. I was looking at this one:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-106-961&depa=0

It's your standard 16x DVD +/- RW drive from LiteOn. Looks great, but what do you guys think?

And for the IDE cable:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=12-181-064&depa=0

So, what do you guys think?

That totals to:

$75
+ $3.45
-------------
$78.45
+ Shipping
-------------
~ $87 USD

Very Happy

Sure...why not?!!

Since yer trying to get it fer Christmas...and it's a long ways out from there...why not wait a bit and let technology work fer you. Unless you've got money burning in yer pocket and just need to spend it now!

BTW, you did think about getting some media in yer $100 spending spree, yes? Wink Smile

Thanks for the offer, but my dad won't let me - he doesn't trust people on the internet - he'll only order stuff from big companies that he's heard of. I had to convince him (this took a few days) to order from Newegg even... Confused

And Bam: as for the media, er... What's the difference between the +RW and -RW discs? Is one better than the other? Confused

Did someone call? Big Smile

Shouldn't make a difference...but it does depend on what yer machines/home units will read. My home recorder writes to +R/RW media so that's what I use... Wink Smile

One thing to consider when getting a DVD RW:

Look at the pricing for DVD RW media - they are not coming down anytime soon. I got an 8x +/- RW burner, but I only buy 4x DVD RWs. I can get those for under $2 each, but I can't find higher speed media for less than $5 per disk. It's better to get a burner that's compatible with both +/- than the highest speed available.

How much do you plan on burning? Like a factory, burning a 1,000 disks a day, or a few here and there? I've only burnt maybe 30 DVDs in 4 months, so my suggestion is to get a 4x or 8x Burner so you can afford to buy the media. When 52x burners come out (the maximum estimated attainable speed), is when 16x disks will be more reasonable. That is probably a couple years off...

Only a few here and there... I have some episodes of Good Eats, Mythbusters and such on my computer that would be nice to have on DVD, but other than that... Confused

I think that burner I linked to (I'm too lazy to actually check) could do +/- R/RW meda, and it was a 4x I believe...
