If I were to get a new heatsink / fan for my Athalon XP 2500+ and wanted to spend about $20 USD, which one should I get? |

Does that include shipping/tax? Before any MIR offers?
Are you planning to overclock?
Will noise be an important factor to you?
I would stick to a copper heatsink...and a 3 clip design.
NewEgg under $20 before shipping listing...
The Volcano 12 is $32 shipped...
I would also recommend a snorkel so the fan isn't sucking any hot backwash back into itself... This is really effective with any speed fan... |

I just got one of these coolers. Its working great on my Ahtlon system..
It was just under $20, and comes with 2 free rounded IDE cables of your choosing. See the CoolerGuys main site for details. |

Noise is not a factor (unless we're talking LOTS of noise, not just standard high-speed fan noise).
I'm not really planning on overlclocking.
Rah: that looks like a really cool one, especailly since my case has a widnow in it.
Bam: Those look good too - I'd much ratehr order from Newegg than CoolerGuys, because I got some cable sfrom CoolerGuys and just shortly after that (myaby a week) my parents' credit card # got stolen... Don't think ti's related, but I don't konw... My parents are more worried about it than I am.
And these would deffinately be better than the stock heatsink/fan that comes with Athalon XPs, right? |

Well...I look good, too!
The stock HSF will do just fine if yer not overclocking...unless yer just in the mood to spend money or something... |

Would I even notice it (if I couldn't check the temps) if my CPU was running cooler? |

Right now it's averaging ~130F (54C) afer a couple hours of gaming. |

Put a snorkel on it and I'm sure yer temps will drop even more. Just don't ferget to put some sort of filter box on it so you don't end up sucking a bunch of dirt/dust/fur into yer HSF... |

hmmmm I had MBM on my pc. I let it run for a day or so clocking my anthlon64 3200+ with stock HSF. At no point did this machine get over 45C this is while crunching and severely stressing game play.
You might want to check your thermal transfer paste. If you are running that hot without trying then you may have a problem. A standard stock HSF should be able to deal with the heat of the CPU even if its OCed just a little. |

So you think the thermal paste may not have good contact between the CPU and heatsink?
Dunno why that'd be, since the guy at PC Club applied it... I would assume he knows that he's doing?
It's sitting in my 72F room, and it's been doing nothing but Folding all day, yet it's currently at 127F (53C)...
After playing intensive games (Doom3, UT2k4, etc) for a few hours, it'll get up to ~135 or 140F... That isn't too bad, is it? |

Really? Mine's (same CPU) just about always at 55º C. |

If it was bad the pc would shut down/reboot. Most modern cpu/motherboards come with some degree of thermal protection.
My XP 2100 would simply crash to desktop( if playing a game), my XP2500 reboots. Both cpu's were overclocked, 2100 had AMD standard HSF, 2500 had a Volcano 9, fan speed set at halfway( this is a very noisy fan).
How quickly does it return to its idle temp. If it stays hot you may want to consider upgrading your cooling.
Also what video card do you have? The card maybe producing a fair bit of heat that is making ambient temp inside your case a little too hot, hence the advice about setting up a snorkle(cold air induction). |
