Do you not listen child?
Unless you have mega-bucks, you need the 754 socket.
The others are for the FX chips, and the new range of 64bit chips. |

You're not really helping, my dear tom.
I don't care if the price is wrong, i just want to know what are the differences between them. |

Socket 754 is what was the code name "Clawhammer." The consumer version of AMD's x86-64 core. Socket 939 and 940 is like tom said, for server/workstations. This was what went by the code name "Sledgehammer." The differences between these chips is that the 939/940s have more L2 cache, and I think bus speeds might be faster? Someone else can better illustrate the technical features but as far as you're concerned: if money is no object then the Opterons and Athlon FX's are best performers. Otherwise go with the 754. |

Hmmm... interesting. There's a difference of 60$ between the AMD64 3400+(754) and the AMD64 3500+(939). I should go with the 939 then, right ? |

Just remember that each one needs a different motherboard. If you get the 754, you have to get a socket 754 motherboard. If you get the 939, you need a socket 939 motherboard. And yep you guessed it, they're not interchangeable. So $30 difference in CPU is one thing, but also look at price differences of motherboards. |

Socket-940 has two memory channels and uses registered ECC DDR memory. This is the socket for Opteron-based servers.
Socket-939 has two memory channels and uses unbuffered PC3200 DDR memory. This is the socket for high-performance Athlon64 desktops and workstations.
Socket-754 has one memory channel and uses unbuffered PC3200 DDR memory. This is the socket for mainstream Athlon64 and Sempron desktops. |

Take a look at the Socket-754 Athlon64 3200+ with 2.2GHz Newcastle core and 512KB level 2 cache. It's noticeably less expensive than the 3400+. |
