If I had 5 80mm fans (not including the PSU fans) and a stock fan/heatsink, how much could I overclock an Athalon XP 2500+?

its not about the amount of fans persay its more about the Heatsink/fan combo as well as the heat transferrablility of the putty.

Then you need to have a MoBo that will allow you to tweak it. preferrably with a windows program so you dont have t restart it everytime you tweak it.
then theirs the stability of the AMD 2500xp which isn't as stable as the amd 2400 mobile which several people here overclocked to a 3200.

So to answer your question . It depends.

3200+ is easily obtainable, due to the way that the Barton chips are manufactured.

Mobo is an A7N8X-E Deluxe, stock heatsink and fan.

A copper hsf or a water cooling system would be better than the stock hsf.

Yep, the stock AMD ones are a bit feeble. Also, bear in mind that you'll need decent RAM for OCing.

If I had optimal cooling (excluding the world of water cooling), how high could it go? What's the maximum OC level for a 2500+ in a computer cooled by fans?

Try this. No one can tell you how high your CPU can go. Every chip is different. Some are great overclockers, and some aren't. If you look at the database entries for the 2500 XP at overclockers.com, anywhere from 1,833 to 3,200MHz. Generally with the 2500, 2.2GHz is a reasonable target. Many will run higher.

You should probably look to a better heatsink if you really want to overclock. The stock one is pretty crappy. Also, if you want to up the fsb, you will need RAM capable of the speed you are looking to run. Your motherboard is a good start. The A7N8X is a good overclocking board.

In theory, there is a direct correlation between temperature decrease and maximum OC increase. The only limiting factor is the quality of that individual CPU.

So in order to overclock it with a noticable performance increase, I'd have to get new RAM and a new heatsink/CPU fan?

Hmm... Starting to cost money.

What FSB would/should I use if I decided to do this? Do any of you have an overclocked 2500+ Barton? What FSB do you have it at?

What RAM do you have? If it's DDR400, then you're fine.

Not sure...

/me looks at mobo box...

Box for the mobo says "Dual DDR400" so I'm assuming that's what I have.

RAM and motherboard are two separate things. Just because the mobo is capable of running Dual DDR400 doesn't mean the RAM is 400. Chances are good, if you didn't specify 400 when you ordered, and you have a 2500XP (333 fsb), then you got DDR333 RAM.
