YAYYYY for ARD!! (Apple Remote Desktop) I can observe my kids on their computer when they are on the web, now, without having to sit right next to them the whole time. At work I use it to bust kiddos that find their way into inappropriate websites (filters do not catch everything) and control the computers remotely.
Anyone else using this program? |

I've opted to "monitor" what my kids see by setting their PC to have a static IP address with no DNS servers being set. The only sites they are allowed to visit are the ones that I pre-screen and add to their host file. They know this is the case and when they want a new site added they come to me and ask me to check it first and then add it to their machine.
Host file example:
64.236.16.231 www.cartoonnetwork.com
207.25.71.118 www.toonami.com
64.236.16.139 i.cnn.net
206.132.214.10 www.neopets.com

We use ARD at work and it has many uses such as inventory of software over a network, controlling software, such as only running the software for a class that has a legal license.........you can also use it to communicate with individual users.....like a chat feature. |

I made a mistake, though, SuperDwarf, at work I upgraded the Administrator's machine to 1.2.4, and now I have to upgrade ALL the stations in the building....D'OH! But that's okay, am renaming them as I go.
What version are you using? |

That is a really good idea fido, the only problem is whent hey get older and need to use the web for research. I guess I'll just get a more comfortable chair next to the computer. |

Ohmigawd - who are they on Neopets???
O2 III is a neopet FANATIC -
every day i get the blow by blow of her points -
and that wheel of death that spins for two hours at a time -
arrrrgh~
Monitoring a 13 year old can get tricky - especially one who has a social conscience and has already read said book 1984...a nd is currently reading UNSCHOOLING... ugh. Revolutionists ...
I don't want her to feel i dont trust her -
We are working on building trust between us - I feel that is VITALLY important for her as a teen and me as her mom...
what a tightrope.
I dont want to appear as a tyrant observing her every whim... nor do I want to BE that - but I still have to watch her safety...
The computer is hooked up to Rov'R's monitor and sits right next to mine...
"What are you reading" and "Who are you talking with" are two very common questions in this house. As is the over the shoulder peek a boo...
So far so good -
but I'm not going to kid myself here.
I have her password - i jump on and chat with her friends so I know who they are and if they are local or not - I let them know it's me tho -
and
I have a nifty key stroke tracer installed... and yes - she knows it -
and yes she knows she can be a victim of a random check up.
And has been - and one particular young man has been ousted from the klingon war circle.
It's tough tho - sorting through what is genuinely kids being teens - and scary stuff. She is also open to reading all the INTERNET SAFETY brochures and is pretty cool with the arrangement.
She has also witnessed me reporting a man to the authorities -
so O2 jr is well aware I mean business and that I am looking out for her safety.
She has also been SO GROUNDED for giving out her name and or phone number. UGH!!!
Ahhhh
what we have to look forward to~ |

EEEEp, O2, glad I got this installed when I did.
So far they are staying within Yahooligans and other "approved" sites and asking me if "such and such" site is okay from the back of the cereal boxes/tv etc..
Did you know we can't be told what books they check out from the school library? That one surprised me. I figured I was keeping a good hand on what sort of material they read by approving their books when I take them to the public library....but now I found out the school libraries do not/cannot divulge that info. Guess I will have to trust their judgement on that one.
My daughters do know that the schools have ARD installed district-wide and that anything they do on the computers can and will be monitored.
I've only had to bust a couple kids this year....and a couple of times I had to remind students "no email." but so far no real issues. Once they find out the computers are monitored that seems to help.
Isn't this FUN??
