I know that Macs cannot play the games that these notebooks can run:
http://www.powernotebooks.com/specs/PowerPro/m5-6.php
http://www.powernotebooks.com/specs/PowerPro/c3-17.php
Those notebooks are also less than US$2300, fully configured. |

There is a 14" iBook which is comparable to most average PC laptops. And then there's a 12" PowerBook, so it's kind of a mix bag.
The iBooks are a real good deal IMHO. 1 GHz minimum now, DDR RAM, fairly decent video card. The only *real* advantage the PowerBooks have over the iBooks now is better video card. Other than that they're pretty much the same in terms of features. Notice I say features and not specs. PBs have slightly higher specs. But again, IMHO the bump up in specs don't justify the cost. For your first endevour, iBook is a smarter choice. |

Unless they changed the features the Ibook does not support DVD writing although you can get a DVD/CR-Writer. I have two powerbooks a 15" for editing and the 12 " for managing my servers at work. I would go with a powerbook probably a 15 or 17" one to fit all your needs.and you can get the DVD writer for the powerbook. If you can purchase through a school bookstore you may save I saved almost $400 on the 15" and that one is mine. The 12" belongs to my school. |

Does Apple offer similar discounts for Non-profit organizations? I'm not a student nor do I have anyone close to me that I can reap benefits from... would be nice to pay less for Mac systems huh? |

I LOVE MY iBOOKS!!!
If you are looking for a "starter" computer and not interested in Top of the Line Fresh Off the Shelf Because I Have Money To Blow I'd say go with the iBook. We have tons of them in our school district and they can really take a beating.
I have my own and also one from work. I can't put them down. They are both 12" screens, which to me is fine, I am so used to them.
My brother/dad have G4 PB's but they are heavy users, they always buy the newest, fastest, best of anything they buy. They both recommended the iBook to me and its exactly what I wanted.
Good luck on your decision! Woohoooo! |

Too late, the Gates foundation already bought us a bunch of Dell notebooks and PocketPCs. |

I've never had much luck surfing the net & toggling on a mac - as compared with surfing on a PC.
Of course - a PC cant hold a candle to the graphics.
So for what *I* surf - my beautiful mac is perfect. |

I will say the only reason I went with a pb instead of the ibook, was that it felt better to the touch, that cool metal feel that warms to the touch. The Ibook feel like a barbie toy makeup case.
At this level, it boils down to touch, go to an apple store and play with both. |
